Try opening his mouth and spitting a treat in. As he gets used to this, open his mouth and wait a few seconds to spit the treat. Pretty soon he will consider this a neat way to get treats.

You need to practice a lot AWAY from the shows. Take your time and just do it gradually and use treats. Not sure how you have to show the teeth in your country, but just do it a little bit at a time for short periods and use a treat for every small improvement.

Re: Showing teeth in shows

I started to use a cue word "show" and when i was done showing teeth he knew their would be a treat that fallowed. He now does very well. I started this at home and we did this every day. Now he doesn't have a problem with it as he knows a treat will fallow!!

Good additional advice. I also use "show teeth". Forgot to mention it.

Re: Showing teeth in shows

one thing to remember get your dog to open his mouth with you standing behind him. I was a nucklehead and only practiced with me being in front and that created issues in the show when the judge was standing where I wanted to... I went to plan B... we got him to show but not as nicely as I would have preferred.

Re: Showing teeth in shows

The only thing I can add is that we check our dogs teeth daily. Check them in the morning. Check them at lunch. Check them at dinner. Check them because the sky is blue. We check them so often that it is no big deal now, just an easy way to get a treat.

Re: Showing teeth in shows

There is an adv on Australian TV by purina about dogs smiling....just to give you a laugh.....

Wouldn't it be nice if we could train our rotty's to smile for the judge and not even have to try and open their mouths....

Hope you get a from the ad...
