Re: A good way to train the Stay command?

Jlaak .....by "chin touch", do you mean you touch the dog's chin, or your own chin (as your hand signal for "release") ???

(I know you've mentioned this chin touch before, and I thought you meant the dog's chin, but then you can't release from a distance....)
The I touch the dogs chin and couple this with the release word okay. Since it is so important to me that my dogs hold commands until the command is over, I provide them with a physical and verbal release. It is entirely possible to release the dog at a distance, you do so by giving another command. IE. I down my dog at a distance. The down is over but I don't want to go get him. I can give a recall (come) or front or too far and all will in essence release my dog from the down without the chin touch.

Re: A good way to train the Stay command?

Thank you , jlaak..... Mango is just at the age to start working on these and we're grateful for your advice, and good ideas. (We're starting on that "wait" inside a rope circle, which you wrote about several months ago, I'm actually really excited to work on it !!!)
