Potty training outside

Is it possible to teach dogs to do there business and a certain area of the yard? I have been searching online but did not come up with anything. I tried taking my dog to the back corner of the yard and gave him a treat once he went, but most of the time as soon as he gets out the house he just goes anywhere. If any of you know any method or product I can you please let me know

Yes...you can do it, but it takes time and work on your part.
You will have to put him on a leash and take him to the part of the yard that you want him to pee/poop in...and give him the command to potty. Keep walking him in small circles in the area till he goes. Then praise like crazy and give him a treat. You will have to do it each and every time he needs to go out. After awhile he should start understanding that that is the area you want him to do it in.

If he's been allowed to pee and poop all over the yard for a long time...the change may not happen fast. Much easier starting with a puppy and doing this.

Take your dog out on lead to the designated area and offer praise, "good potty" and treat once accomplished.

Then let your dog off lead and play with it or let him explore, supervised of course. You can also use it as additional training time...

I was told to set up a "border" using PVC pipe; this way the dog can visualize where to go. You still need to use the leash until he knows what the "border" is for; after a while, you can take the pipe up

I would not suggest letting the dog off lead unless the yard is fenced or the dog has 100% recall.

Shelby427,

I am with you 100% on not letting off lead unless 100% recall. I should have mentioned that, glad that you did.

Re: Potty training outside

I did this with my pup. I took her to her spot when I knew she was ready to go and gave her her most favorite treat ever ONLY when she went there. I did this from the day I brought her home.

It took her until she was about 6 months old, but now, she won't pee anywhere but there. Even if we're out hiking in the woods, she will hold it all day so she can pee in her potty spot. So I would say it almost worked TOO WELL because sometimes we have to cut our hike short because I know she has to go and I don't want her to get a UTI from holding it too long.

I still her treat her periodically for this and she's 10 months old. But now it's sporadic and with a lower value treat.

I just got a rottweiler two days ago. They were going to euthanize her at the pound, so I adopted her. The pound believes she is two years old. She's very sweet and great with people. I was informed that she was housebroken, however, I've run into some problems in this area. She will bark at the door and appear to need to go to the bathroom, so I will take her outside on a leash, but she will not do her business. She had an accident inside, and I could tell by looking at her even before I reprimanded her, that she felt bad about it. I guess what I'm asking is how do I get a two year old that seems housebroken to go outside or is she having problems because she is just adjusting to her new home?

Re: Potty training outside

Our breeder had an area with cedar chips for the litter, that she started training them to use very early. So, when we brought Mango home, we just spread a small area with cedar chips in the yard, and took her there every time. We always scoop the poop and put it on the cedar chip pile, so usually she goes within 10-15 feet area around it. (poo only, she kind of picked her own spot where she always piddles, seperate from the other, but it's fine with us.).

The cedar chips seem to keep the area smelling better, too.

It's only been two days. Take her out regularly instead of waiting for her to bark at the door. Give your potty command and wait until she does eliminate then praise just the same as you would with a pup. She doesn't yet know where you want her to go.
