Giving the wrong correction??

I have been leaving Storm's leash on him in the house so that when he does something wrong I can quickly grab it and give him a quick tug for correction. This has helped him with his jumping on people coming in the door, chasing the cats and his humping issue.

When I was correcting him I would give him the tug on the leash and would then make him sit until I had his attention. Then I would let the leash go and he could resume what he was doing. Sometimes he would sit there for alittle bit and sometimes he would roll onto his back. When I walked away he just followed me whereever I went.

The only problem is now when we go on walks and he starts pulling or getting to excited I give him this quick tug and he will immediatey sit in the middle of the road and roll onto his back and the only way I can get him to resume walking is if I walk away from him and leave the leash go.

What did I do to this dog??

Sounds like he may be playing you a little. Take some treats on your walk, ask him to heel, when you stop he should sit or you can lure him into a sit with your treat, give him the treat and praise. If he pulls the sitting and rolling over lure him up with the treat. Or when you are walking and he pulls turn around and go the other way without the tug correction.

He is doing exactly what you trained him to do!!! Smart aren't they.

My wife had a similar "problem" with our Benny about a week ago.
I have problems with my legs now and then and it affects my balance so I have trained Benny to never go through a doorway in front of or next to me. I have also trained him to wait for me to go up and down stairs---I go up or down FIRST and then I call him and he comes to me.
About a week ago my wife goes down stairs to get some craft stuff and she is ready to come back up stairs.
So, I hear her saying "GO" , "GO UPSTAIRS" , "OK" and a bunch of other stuff.
Finally she says " Hey, Benny won't go up the stairs"
I am standing near the top of the stairs biting my tongue not knowing whether to be angry or laugh.
I ask her why he won't come upstairs.
She doesn't know--"he is just laying there with his tail waging and looking up at me with his head tilting from side to side like I'm nuts."
I say " He thinks you are---me too."
Then she gets it--she comes up first and we have a couple of minutes of discussion --all the while Benny is down there in the dark waiting to hear the word HERE.
Wife starts to walk to the Kitchen and I ask if she is going to leave him down there all night.
She says HERE and Benny comes flying up the stairs to a perfect front.
He did just what he was trained to do---GOOD BOY!!
I am still working on the wife---Benny is actually easier to train.

Thats what Storm is doing---just what you trained him to do!! GOOD BOY!!
Don't worry, you didn't hurt him or break him---he'll be fine---see, he is trainable and wants to please you---and he'll do it in the house or out on a walk--just what YOU trained him to do.

I bet you get it now. Just modify your techniques a little.

Instead of using the leash at home try to redirect your dog when visitors are coming.First make him sit and then let approach the visitor.As you maybe know the moment of the correction is very crucial to be effective.At this moment, your dog connected the tug on the leash as a command(sit) ,not as a correction.High time to learn how to teach a dog.Are you doing training classes?

Yes, we have been doing that. He isn't perfect but he's getting the hang of it.

We did a short class locally before I did much research on the subject, like a puppy pre-school. It was just basics. We are starting another course April 1st that lasts for 6 weeks and then he's enrolled in another, more in depth training course, and then I'm still deciding which class to take next. They have agility, tracking, and Rally training classes.
