Still having pee problems

Alright so Gary is 6 months old now and I would say is about 90% house broken. He does not have accidents in the house anymore, meaning he doesn't intentionally go potty in the house. We are still having problems with him "leaking" pee though, as I mentioned in an earlier thread I had posted.

In that thread I was told he probably had a UTI, so we went to the vet and they said everything was normal about his urine, so medical issues have been ruled out. That is why I am making a new thread, because I would really love some advice or stories about YOUR rottie puppies who maybe went through this same phase (I hope this is just a phase).

Gary pees on the floor or even on your shoes when he is excited. Everyone in the house knows he has this problem, and because of that when people walk by and he is happy they all just ignore him. If you talk to him or bend down to pet him, he will probably pee all over you. What is frusterating here is that he also does this just for people walking by. Everyone knows to ignore him, but even when Gary is being ignored he still will pee. WHY??????!

My solution has been to make sure that he is empty when people are going to be coming over (we have a very busy house, so it is always exciting here) and that usually does the trick. But sometimes 10 minutes after he has been emptied someone will come by and there he goes again. I am going through carpet cleaner like crazy!

I would really love some extra advice if possible as to how to get Gary to stop doing this, or if anyone else's puppies did/do the same behaviors and how you dealt with it and if they grew out of it or not.

Thank you!

Re: Still having pee problems

Nisha did this as well ; it is known as "submissive urination". Don't worry he will grow out of it We have concrete floors, so cleaning up wasn't as big of an issue; thank goodness!

In the mean time....don't let people pet him unless he is VERY calm. Eventually he will learn not to get excited when people walk by (they don't pet him, so why would he care?). Our trainer told us to tell people "sure you can pet my dog...just don't talk" Nisha wasn't as bad as Gary though.

I can't remember when Nisha stopped; I just noticed one day that she doesn't pee anymore! I would say, give it a few more months and he will grow out of it! Good luck!

Re: Still having pee problems

When I was growing up, we had a Cocker Spaniel who would do this....for 14 years. :( He would run over to a person who just walked in, roll over onto his back and piddle from excitement.

On a good note, wouldn't this mean that you don't have to worry about your dog having dominance issues?

Re: Still having pee problems

I have just quickly scanned all your relevant posts and I apologise if I repeat anything that has already been mentioned. Has he been checked for an ectopic ureter. Do a search and see if it applies, has he also had kidney function tests. Hope this helps, Both can cause leakage of urine.

Re: Still having pee problems

I really doubt this is anything medical. Gary is a healthy dog and is on a good diet and has been seen by a vet. At his next appointment I will have them run some blood tests though.

I did think that the peeing behavior is submissive at first, but he doesn't cower in submission like most dogs I have met with this issue. He will just be wagging his little stub and walking around squirting/leaking pee. He is excited when he does this, but he isn't cowering or rolling over onto his back.

I would hope that I don't have to deal with dominance issues! He does seem to be getting a bit more dominant towards our other dogs now that he is starting to mature though. With us he just wants to please and be loved, but if something better is going on he wants his own way. So stubborness, yes, dominance, I hope not!

An ectopic ureter may be considered. However, if the elimination problem is only when there are new people to great, that is more on the line of submissive urination. With an ectopic ureter, the urination would be more constant and not situational.

It doesn't matter if he cowers. Nisha was VERY excited to meet people, not cowering at all; she was wiggley, and bouncy when she used to do this. Submissive urination is just the name. Even though he may not be showing "signs" of submission, that is what it is.

He WILL grow out of it ask your trainer :)

Re: Still having pee problems

Yeah my trainer just laughed at me and said "he is still just a baby". To me 6 months isn't really baby-ish anymore though. At this age they are little teenagers and I would expect better bladder control.

I still tell people Nisha is a baby/puppy (she turned 1 last month).

Its kind of sad when they stop...its like a realization that they are growing up. Soon enough (around 8 months) he will stop ; until then....stock up on carpet cleaner

Re: Still having pee problems

Hi there!

Is Gary altered? That would be my first question.

Sadie is three and still gets excited and releases the randmon tinkle when my dad comes over. I've found that, as soon as he arrives, it helps if *he* walks outside with her, lets her wee, and brings her back in the house. As long as he stays with her, she'll tinkle outside and have no accidents when they both retur;n indoors.

I think your problem is probably normal though. In my experience, my rottie had a longer puppy stage than my previous breeds. But, once she turned three, she became a big lump! It was like the difference between night and day!

Re: Still having pee problems

Hey,
My 16wks old female started doing this last week! But only with people that she didn’t see for a long time (3 days or more). Since I got her she always loved strangers and people. Whenever we meet someone new she cowers, wiggling her bum and goes under knees or between legs waiting to be scratched. If ignored or denied attention she will jump or nip your jeans until she gets a good rub on her back.
I’m not really sure on what to do if this uncontrollable peeing continues or becomes a big problem. I hope she will grow out of it tough!

Re: Still having pee problems

Gary is nearly 7 months now, and still does it. I think he is starting to notice that he does it now, because when he piddles from excitement he stops paying attention to you and sniffs the area he accidentally peed on.

My hope is that he is realizing that he is losing his muscle control, and maybe he can start to work on it a bit more. His excitement piddles are also becoming smaller. Instead of spraying everyhwere like he used to, sometimes it is just a tinkle or even a few drops.

Re: Still having pee problems

Mine did it for awhile. He would get so excited when I got home, I thought he was going to break himself in two by wiggling. :) I would not pay attention to him until he calmed down.. Not sure if that did the trick, by he doesnt do it anymore.
