Re: Still having pee problems

zumie, ur pup and mine are related! my pup has been doing this every now and then for the past 2 months. about 3 or 4 times it's happened. he gets excited and pees a litle. i am hoping he grows out of it soon. hey, when are you planning on getting gary fixed? my guy is till in tact (8 months), and i figured i'd wait till he is a little older. was there ever a consensus on the right time to do it, or is that super subjective?

Re: Still having pee problems

lately we're meeting more and more neighbours when we take a walk, and due the warmer weather, more people are outside. i let him say hi, but the other day, he peed on this poor lady's feet. she didn't care, cause she used to have dogs, but i was like......."oh geez", not everyone will be that understanding. he always does it at this one pet store i go to as well. someone mentioned something interesting about.....don't let them talk to the puppy. that's interesting. the people at the pet store go all goo goo when my puppy comes in, so that probably gets him extra excited.

I think the consensus is that IF you can be responsible and keep your dog from impregnating other animals, it is best to wait. I think it is best to wait until 12 months. I will try to find the thread for you.

I would never let Max pee on someone. That's extremely bad manners and can and should be stopped as his leg is going up. You are very lucky the lady didn't care, because if some dog cocked his leg and peed on me, it would be the last time he ever did it.

Max also recently went through a spurt of wanting to pee on people. He did it once, caught me by surprise, but never managed to do it again. I kept him on a short lead and the moment I saw his leg move, he was corrected. He's fine now, but something like that should be stopped asap.

Re: Still having pee problems

thanks - nishasmom for the link on nuetering.

maxx - i hear you. hard to catch my guy when he gets excited, as he is not lifting his leg yet. it almost goes unnoticalble, and then u just see a little puddle. but it looks like i just got to interject before he gets too excited.

It definitely makes correcting harder when they don't but just watch him like a hawk. You might also want to try calming him down before he meets people. If he's not calm, he can't meet them. And tell them to ignore him until he's calm.

Now I know that's really hard to do because everyone loves a rottie puppy but try to enlist some of your friends to "meet" him. Just threaten them with murder if they pay any attention to the pup when he's excited, that's what I did with Max. I told my friends before they came over that they had to ignore him until he's calm and if they didn't, I'd kick them out of the house. Negative reinforcement works well on humans!

Our puppies really are twins aren't they? Gary's pee problem has got SO much better since I have originally posted this thread. He doesn't excitedly pee puddles anymore, now he just tinkles a tiny bit. Even though he is still peeing, I see a huge improvement. Maybe one day it will just go away all together...

What I have been doing to help him out is trying to make sure that he is empty every time there is a possibility that someone is going to come over to say hi. Before every walk he pees. When I get home, I don't say hi we go straight outside to let him pee then we greet inside after he has gone potty.

This has helped him a lot, and like I said now he no longer pees a ton when he is excited it is just a bit. By keeping them empty when they do get excited they actually have to push pee out instead of just let it leak, so I think it helps them realize that they are peeing at a time they don't need to be.

As for neutering, Gary is 7.5 months old and still intact. He is getting snipped either at 12 months, or if he randomly goes hormonally haywire with excessive marking, dog aggression, or extreme dominance (humping me or other people). So far he still squats to pee, loves every other dog that he sees, and will often roll over submissively for a belly rub So I think it is safe to say he will be getting done at 12 months.
