| Re: Commands in different Language I think it's kind of gimmicky just so you think nobody else can use them to control your dog. What if you had to take the dog to a vet and it had to stay there for several days...what if some friend had to take care of your dog when you were out of town for a couple days. Nothing wrong with a dog following commands by someone else with your approval. I use german commands on the schutzhund field, mostly because it's a venue that originated in germany, a lot of the judges are german, and it's just kind of tradition. But off the field I generally use English.

| Re: Commands in different Language I didnt mean "just so i can talk to my dog and no one else" I didnt mean to make it sound selfish... But just for fun... Is it possible to use both German and English? I mean "sit" in German is "sitz". |

| Re: Commands in different Language I use German for my "do it now and perfectly" commands but English for my more relaxed directions, for example, around the house, and for herding (because I don't know what the German would be!). And there are a LOT of people out there that know the German commands so your purpose would not be too effective! |

| Re: Commands in different Language Yeah... i might think i know how to say it, even with a guy online pronoucing it. Ill probably end up looking dumb by not pronoucing it right. |

| Re: Commands in different Language I have used both German and English and have had no problem with confusion. I really believe a trained dog cues more off of body language and position than the verbal command. I would use only one command when training a new behavior though...

| Re: Commands in different Language Quote:
You training your dog will give you control over him, and build the respect from him that warrants him listening to you over other people. Proofing your dog will take care of your concerns. For the "regular joe", it's really smarter to train in your own native tongue, largely because if and when there is a dangerous/stressful moment, that's what you will remember, and it's a safer bet. That being said, I do use German on the field for my 'formal' commands, because mrpooh is not the most consistent person (we call him the 'anti trainer' !!), and it makes things clearer for the dog. This means we use two languages for the dogs.. English in the house, and German on the field, and it means more work for me. ![]()

| Re: Commands in different Language Emmy's trainer is involved in French Ring and he does decoy work too. Consequently, Emmy's mom was trained in french and I liked the way it sounded, so I trained her in french too. BUT, she has been in obedience class for so many years now, that she knows all of her commands in english too. We call her tri-lingual, french, english and hand signals! These dogs are smart, just have fun training!! |
