I hope you don't have to wait for 5 hours at the clinic. That's stressful for you and your dog. |

If I suspected one of my dogs had a UTI, I would just drop off a urine sample...and they would call me with the results and leave me some medication to pick up at the front desk....or squeeze them in for an examination. Gina

| Re: 5 months and still not potty trained. Quite frankly, if my regular vet couldn't squeeze me in if I think my dog is sick, I darned sure he wouldn't be my vet any longer. Plain old check up or shots is one thing BUT sick is another story!

| Re: 5 months and still not potty trained. Zumie05-did you clearly tell the vet's office staff what you think the problem may be. If I called my vet and told them I thought my pup had a UTI, they damn better get me in that office the same day or I'm looking for a new vet! At a mimimum they should have told you how to collect a specimen and had you bring it to the office for a urinalysis. |

| Re: 5 months and still not potty trained. this post makes me appreciate my vet here in Charlotte even more!! one can walk in at any time during the day and they only takes appointments for teeth cleaning , spaying and so forth, otherwise their door is open. they has been my vet thru 20 years , the most I have ever waited is 30 minutes and I will do that any day as opposed to having to make an appointment. Perhaps you could just capture the urine and then stop in at your vet unannounced , surely they would not refuse you. |

| Re: 5 months and still not potty trained. Could you perhaps call your vet again and ask if they've had a cancellation???? I have never had to wait more than 2 hours to see my vet (We must be fortunate in Australia) and if my vet is busy he tells me to drop off the dog off and he will look it at some stage during the day - when things get quiet, sometimes people just dont show up. Personally if i were you i'd just go and make them see my dog. Its not right to make a sick dog wait for treatment and i'd sure as hell be telling them what i thought too. I really feel for your poor dog |

| Re: 5 months and still not potty trained. Okay everyone here is an update! Gary went to the vet on monday (I had to go to the walk in clinic because seriously, everywhere I called said they were booked. I even had some friends refer me to their vets and still I couldn't get in, and no where said it was okay for me to just drop off a urine sample and come back later!) and it actually went quite well. Because it was a holiday and early in the morning they weren't busy at all and I got to see a doctor in 20 minutes. Lab results came back today and everything is normal other than that it was diluted. They did offer for them to have some blood tests done to check for kidney problems, but also said they doubted anything was wrong as his breath has gotten better and they think the itchyness on his back is due to fleas (they said some dogs don't take to advantage well which is what I was using on him) and that I should switch flea medications. I am thinking about having blood work done anyways just incase. The only real thing I can think of that is causing my trouble with getting Gary to hold his pee in is that his bladder is simply small. The vet did point out while she was palpatating his abdomen that his bladder felt small and that it just needs to catch up to the size of the rest of his body. Today when the vet called me back she said that the results showed that his urine was pretty diluted like he does drink a lot of water, but that it is typical of male rotties that she has seen before that they get excited easily (Gary does for sure) and pant and tend to drink more often. I think that sounds like Gary exactly. Any other pointers from you guys though? Here is a reminder of how Gary's accidents in the house look like: He doesn't actually squat and pee in the house on purpose, he leaks occasionally and will also pee when something cool is happening according to him...like someone will walk by him NOT EVEN LOOKING AT HIM or anything! Weird, but to me sounds like over excitedness. I know with excited urination you are supposed to not look at, touch, or talk to the dog. Well no one does, and he pees simply just at the sight of something fun happening. This morning when I woke up I bent over to say good morning to him, and soon discovered that he had just peed on his bed. |
