Advice Needed Re: Road Work

My male Rottie will be 24 months on April 13th the same day that he will get his hips and elbows x-rayed. I just started jogging him next to my bike (only 1 mile until he gets used to the idea), but I want to be sure that we're going about it the right way.

He's in good shape now, but my ultimate goal is to get him conditioned the way a working Rottie should be conditioned - strength plus endurance.

I'd appreciate any advice/experience people might have in this area.

Thak You,
MJ & Diego

First - total obedience is a must for the safety of you, your dog and other road users. Check the traffic regulations for biking with a dog.

There are some golden rules when cycling:
Take the dog out to do its business, do a warm up and check the paws before and after.
No meal 3-4 hours before and 1 hour after cycling.
No peeing or sniffing under the run.
Be aware of the heat. Don’t cycle if the temperature is higher than 68 degree, and only if your dog is in pretty good condition.

The dog must run in trot and be in a “hell position”, but at the right side of the bike. I use the command “bike”.
Build up the distance (max. 5 miles) and the speed to about 7,5 miles/hour (max. 9 miles/hour). Observe the dog all the time, it has to be fun. If the dog begins to fall behind, or if it breaks into pace or gallop, it can be a sign of tiredness.

Some prefer to use a “Springer” when cycling. I feel more “safe” using a 3 feet leash and hold it over two fingers and my arm down along my body.

Good luck and tail wind ;)

To be honest, I wouldn't have started him out doing a mile. I would've worked him up to that distance. Also, make sure to check his pads to be sure the pavement isn't causing any problems. I prefer to exercise my dogs on softer surfaces than pavement.
