Training Vest

I'm looking for something (a vest, bandana, etc.) that let's people know Hunter is "working" and would prefer not to be pet during that time.

I know that part of his training is socialization with people from all walks of life, etc., but while we're working on distractions in public places, I would prefer if people do not approach him.

Perhaps I'm completely off my rocker in thinking something like that is necessary?!

Re: Training Vest

Is Hunter being trained to be a service dog? IF so, are you training him yourself or are you getting help from a trainer?
There are places on the internet that supply vests and patches for service dogs. Sitstay.com is one. Having a vest might bring more interest then without one.

Re: Training Vest

How bout one that just says ON DUTY. I don't think the cops will like "Police Dog". Or, "SECURITY", ha ha like a bouncer. I think anything would attract attention. Arent you close enough to say "please don't appraoach my dog"?

As one who is working on the same type of things, I don't think you're off your rocker at all......in fact - can I use your idea???

Bandanas tend to attract people, so I'd use a vest. I think I'd put something like this on it:

I'M IN TRAINING
Can We Visit Later?

Sort of a polite way of telling people, "Leave It!"

Heavens.....you must be immune from BSL where you live? People are too quick to think that all on their own, as it is, without any help from us!

I think groupie was joking

I too think vests are easier because the print is more readable from a distance...bandanas usually get crumpeled and have to be straightened to be seen (we have one that says "My human votes" and people ask me all the time what it says) and people seemt o ahve a hard time resisting a dog wearing a bandana!

I'm sure she was, but there's always going to be some peabrain that comes along, reads it, and thinks it's a great idea. Hence the comment.

No, Hunter is not being trained to be a service dog. I just want an exceptionally well-behaved dog, therefore, I like to take him out and about to see and experience new things any chance I get.

We're planning to attend a very large, outdoor car show in the next few weeks and I would really like to take him with. However, since there will be alot of people and I'll be "working" him through that large crowd, I'd like something that's easily viewed that says something along the lines of "I'm working, please don't touch."

Moondog, I like your idea!

groupieindenial, I BITE made me laugh out loud. And, after the day I've been having, I really needed that! :D

Re: Training Vest

If you can sew, you can make one easy. Cheap material (Walmart usually has some $1.00 a yard stuff) You need less than a yard. Iron on letters from craft store or Walmart's craft dept. Two or three used or Dollar Store adjustable collars. One collar cut in half and sewn to each side of the front neck part and one or two for the underbelly part cut in half and sewn to each side. Cut and sew the size you need to make like a saddle looking pad. Iron on the words you want and sew the straps on. It is easy. I made one for my fosters when I would take them out. It said Adopt Me on it.

Myia,

Unfortunately, I was never good at sewing. :(

Perhaps I can enlist my grandmother... :D
