Clicker Training

I was in the local Petsmart and I saw a box of those clickers. I wanted to know if these were a good way to train puppys? And if so how are they used?

Re: Clicker Training

I think you'll find the answer to your question is "yes." In terms of how they're used, here are two threads that should have the info you need:

Thread 1

Thread 2

Re: Clicker Training

I clicker train. It's wonderful, but you need to actually get into a clicker training class or get a very good book to learn how to do it correctly. Most of the people who have a poor opinion of it either don't do it properly, don't understand it, or have only been exposed to dogs trained by people who didn't do it properly. My clicker trained dog has a better working attitude and far more enthusiasm for work than any of my traditionally-trained dogs ever did, I highly recommend it as long as you learn how to do it properly.

Re: Clicker Training

Arwen learned alot with clicker training. With a bit of help from our trainers and the book "Clicking with your Dog" we were able to teach her things in just a few minutes. The most important part is being able to click the SECOND the action you want is accomplished. I think my next dog will be trained with a clicker from the start and we will get alot done faster.

Re: Clicker Training

I have been clicker training with Bear for about 6 months and I have to say he seems to "get" thigs with the clicker - in fact he goes CRAZY when I take it out.

I have been working with a trainer and got a book from clickertraining.com for competition obedience that is very detailed in the hows and whys of clicker training. It's a lot of theory but helpful.

I still think that "I" have more to learn about clicker traning but so far for what we ahve been doing, it seems to be working.

If I were to get a puppy, or another adult dog, I'd start with clicker training right away.

Re: Clicker Training

I started using clicker training on an adolescent foster for whom the more traditional methods of training were not working....the improvement in attitude and response when I switched to clicker training and positive reinforcement were remarkable. Especially with a puppy, I would absolutely recommend clicker training as it is totally non-confrontational...and the dogs absolutely love it! Best of luck with your pup.

Re: Clicker Training

"Clicker Training For Obedience" by Morgan Spector is the best book to get yourself started in clicker training, if you can't find a class first.

Clicker training is a great way to shape behaviors.
