Talking Running ?

Hi,

Was wondering, what would be a reasonable age for the puppy to start running/training for long distance runs with me ?

What do you mean by LONG distance? If you get great prelim x-rays at 12 months for both hips and elbows, I would say you could start short distances at about 18 months, and slowly work your way up to 4 or 5 miles.

I don't think Rottweilers are a good breed for long distance running. They cannot take the heat and I see that you live in a warm climate.

I agree with Skip....wait till the pup is 12 months old and have x-rays taken...then at about 18 months (when the growth plates in the bones are closed) start slowly running and conditioning your dog.

I see a Dob or a Saluki or Dalmation, or Standard Poodle more as a running partner.

Re: Running ?

The AD test is 20K so I'm not convinced that rotties can't run...dogs must be 16 months old.

Bear runs with me up to 10k...we don't run in the AWFUL heat and we stop for water breaks, and I check his paws, I run fairly slowly so he never gets past a trot. OF course, I don;t expect him to go from o to 10 k he trains by increasing mileage (The general rule for humans is to never increase mileage by more than 10% in a week)

I'm not saying that ALL dogs can/should run but, assuming that your dog has been cleared structurally (hips/elbows), seen by a vet, is at an appropriate weight, and the training is gradual, I see no reason why a dog can't run.

Of course if you do run with your dog you need to be aware of signs of heat stress and exhaustion...many dogs will follow their masters anywhere, wether it's safe or not.

An AD is just a one time event (or until you pass it). A dog SHOULD be able to run, but the OP hinted on LONG distance running, and I assumed on a regular basis. I'd like to know the distance the OP is hoping to achieve and how often?

True one person's idea of long is not another's.

I would assume though that people train their dogs for the AD and that the dog just doesn't go out and do it even if it is just the one test.

That would be like a human running a Marathon or half marathon with no training...

My dog has his AD ....and I have ran a marathon, but we don't run that far on a regular basis. That's why I want to know what the OP is hoping for.
