Special Dog, Special Training!!!

Hello everyone, I hesitated joining yet because unfortunately my new baby boy was only born on 2/1/01 so I am not yet in possession of him. However, I am so excited to learn as much as I can about the breed, I decided to join now. He will be my first Rottie and I just cannot wait. I've already purchased his crate, collar, "bite" toys and tennis balls and scheduled him for his first obedience training class.

I write to you because I would like to know your experiences with training your Rotties and what technics seemed to work and what technics did not. I feel like Rotties are a special breed and should be treated as such. I have also been told that certain training that may work on one dog may not work on a Rottie. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you have any ideas for what else I may need when he finally comes home, please let me know.

Thank you!!!!!!!! :D

Welcome to the board! I recommend you do searches here on the board under the Training and Behavior sections, plus read Rottweiler books. Some really good ones are "The complete idiots guide to Rottweilers" "Rottweilers for Dummies" and "Training your Rottweiler." All of these can be found at pet/book stores or online at places like amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com.

As far as techniques...what works for one Rottie may not work for yours. But what I can tell you is that they are very smart dogs who are very willing to please! Use treats and verbal praise, toys, games, whatever seems to work for you and your pup. When you're ready for puppy class, your trainer should be able to help you out as well...and if you're getting your pup from a reputable breeder I recommend you go to this person as well as a good breeder can be one of your most valuable resources (at least I know mine is!)

Let us know how things go!

GOOD LUCK and Congratulations!

Congratulations on your soon-to-be new family member AND your decision to join this forum and learn as much as possible before you bring him home. Read everything you can so you'll be prepared to use the training methods and philosophies that best suit you and your dog. Breed aside, every dog is an individual. One word of caution, though. Please be sure your new baby has undergone all his puppy shots before joining any classes. Socialize him at home with friends and family and take him for rides in the car. If you get out of the car, please hold him rather than putting him down on the ground where he could pick something up. The same is true for the vets office. Best of luck!

Thank you both so much for your help. I am going to go pick up some books tonight. I am just so excited and although I know I will make mistakes, I would like to make them as few as possible.

I believe joining this group has been one of the best things that I could have possibly done, I have learned so much just from reading what comments and concerns people here have.

Once again, thank you for your help.

Thank you Jonathan for your welcome. This Forum truly is the greatest. Dozer, what a great name for a Rottie. How old is he? My little boy is now 3 weeks and we only have five more to wait :( It seems like forever. His name however, is going to be Aladar. Once again, thanks for your warm welcome.
