cesar Milan

There was a thread concerning Cesar Milan and another older, well-known trainer who uses the newer method. I can not find the thread and would like to know the other persons name. I am not impressed with Milan's methods and want to read more about the other trainer.

Re: cesar Milan

It was Ian Dunbar. I came across the thread when I was searching on Cesar Millan last week.

Another board had a thread going with nothing but praise and hero worship of Cesar. I wanted to interject a little reality into that discussion because I knew some on this board might like Cesar a little, but don't think he's the end all, be all of dog trainers.

Thank You for your help. I personaly do not care for Milan's methods, but each to his own.

Re: cesar Milan

I'm not a huge fan of Cesar but it's worth noting that he doesn't claim to be dog trainer so it's best that he is not compared to one.

True. But he DOES claim to be a "dog psychologist", which is a meaningless term, but one that less-aware people might think is an actual title, which is offensive to those who've spent years becoming educated and accredited as actual dog behaviourists, THEY are the real "dog psychologists". Millan uses this term to give some level of credibility to his methods, even though they are based on theories which were discredited years ago by the people who actually do the research and science of dog behaviour.

Re: cesar Milan

right, other than showing Rotts and Pits in a positive light he's mostly worthless in my book. I was at the gym last night and they had his show on so I tuned into that rather than Dr Phil. I didn't watch the whole show but the forst part dealt with a dalmation puppy. The owners (LA fire Dept) wanted to teach the dog how to stop drop and roll, cesar cleary stated that he was NOT a dog trainer and called in a hollywood dog trainer who demonstrated clicker training and positive re-encforcement. I've watched a few of his shows and from what I've seen this was the best one for the public because it demonstrated positive training techniques.

I get so sick of walking around or going to the dog park and hear people go "sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" and then jabbing their dogs with their hand.

Hopefully now those people will looking into clicker training which is the method I've used for years. (I'm not a dog trainer)

Re: cesar Milan

I will probably get alot of flack for this but I am a Cesar fan. I have watched his show and even gone to a class with him and his skills with animals is amazing.

But he is not the end all of dog training, most of the folks out there think that they can read the book, make the little noise and the dog is cured. NOT. It takes alot of time, patience and understanding to deal with a dog with a problem. I know I have one that has had some psych/behavior issues since we found her as a stray. She will chase her tail for literally hours until she drops from exhaustion. I used doggie Prozac as well as other methods prescribed by dog trainers locally, the vet etc. Nothing worked until I saw the Cesar in action and started thinking of this dog as just that a dog.........while she still will spin occasionally when frustrated, she is mostly now a happy, fun loving little dog who is no longer the little paranoid, dog that she was. She is now the best friend of our new Rottie. At 8lbs Squirty (the wonderdog!!!) plays with 56lb Belair who now towers over her at 5 months of age. They walk, play, sleep (repeat this 5000 times a day!!!) constantly, where one is the other is.

Our dogs take time, most people want the perfect dog without any work, at the very least we can give Cesar thumbs up for at least bringing more attention to the lack of responsibility that dog owners often have. He loves Rotts...........another reason I will always be a fan.

Re: cesar Milan

I have become a fan of Cesars as well. A huge part because he is not disrespectful of Rotts, Shepards & Pitts. No one persons methods work for everyone.

Re: cesar Milan

I just started watching the dog whisperer but I think Cesar is very loyal to the Rottweiler breed as he mentions them in many of his episodes. However, I think it's pretty interesting that most people on the show treat their dogs as children or people. The majority of his shows revolve around changing the people's behaviors and putting them in the leader role.

Re: cesar Milan

I do watch his show, and I like him, I just dont think some of his methods are good, you know how some people are, they see something on TV and try it alone without training and all hell breaks loose

Re: cesar Milan

Personally, I like Cesar Milan. The thing I like most about his show is how he trains the people. He shows how most cases where a "bad" dog is present its only because the dog isnt sure how we want them to behave. Its up to us to communicate what we want from our dogs.

I havent seen every episode so Im unaware of any negative training techniques he might have used. I do know that he has helped me greatly in teaching my dogs to properly walk on a leash.

As he does the Pit Bull. The 2 most "celebrated" of dog breeds known right now in the media... He uses both breeds shamelessly to impress his public. Yet, and most certainly, not to the benefit of the dog.

Loyal? No. Hardly.
