Basic Obedience - Second Time Around

Bryant & I graduated AGAIN from basic obedience tonight!!! We are having fun now and in the past two weeks, we have turned a corner in our training! We start basic again December 6th - we're going for a "triple" We're staying in basic so we can continue working on our specific challenges in that beginners class situation. We need the newbie dogs and owners to provide the stimuli that has plagued and diverted us in the past. I'm just rambling a bit - but it's really rewarding to take a GREEN dog into class and at this point, hear your trainer say "look how calm he is - he's a different dog - he makes me proud" .........he's starting to make me proud too

Re: Basic Obedience - Second Time Around

I totally know what you mean. we even stopped getting certificates and gift bags. Both Boris and Hilda have gone through several levels of obedience, several times. Hilda, because that is all that is available, Boris because I can't get my nerve up for the off lead stuff.

It is very satisfying to take a rottie into class and have them do everything right!

it is just taking advantage of the oportunities for distraction and practice.

Re: Basic Obedience - Second Time Around

Bryant is a good boy, and your SHOULD be proud of him. Walking into a room with 10 other rotties, small kids, laughing adults, and him acting like a gentalman is something to be proud of, I saw it with my own eyes! Arwen's teachers didn't open up an Agility 2 class till Dec, then they made it a short class so I was looking at OB 2 again, but they haven't got ANY classes for the rest of the year that I can attend due to work schedual. So now I am searching for another group. Arwen would be fine going through any classes again, as there is ALWAYS room for improvment with a puppy (almost 2 yrs.. I dont see the puppyness going away soon ).

Good luck with the class, and maybe the next time around he'll be ready for Ob 2.

Thanks CH I am GLAD I have a few witnesses out there to his "goodness", since there are a few more witnesses than I like to his "badness" - but hopefully we will be righting that wrong as we move forward. And Debbie - your posts about Boris make me feel like we are kindred spirits where training is concerned.........I saw a fortunate cookie the other day that I altered and it made me smile........here's the jest:

Re: Basic Obedience - Second Time Around

Vicki,

Bryant was WONDERFUL at Rottstock...I kept on wondering when you were going to bring out your "problem" dog . He was very well behaved! But a big part of that was you keeping him focused & occupied, too.

Amber aced Basic but we had to repeate intermediate twice because after the first time I took her to agility to help her build confidence & agility worked so well that my newly confident dog felt no need to listen to me anymore . You've met Amber, 4 years later & she is NOTHING like the untrained, ill mannered mess that we brought home from the rescue.

You're doing everything right...keep doing it.

Nina

OH MY A title on this dog would be cause for a complete loss of control on my part .....we have a bit more work to do with "approaching other dogs on lead" before we can venture too far from where we are - but boy do I appreciate the good thoughts and confidence you all have in "us" ....

Re: Basic Obedience - Second Time Around

vicki, you will be sooooo glad you're doing this. I did the same with both Sierra and Jazz, we took the classes over and over until they got bored, and only then did we move up to the next level. I kept this up with Sierra for 4 years, and with Jazz for 3.5 years. They were the best behaved dogs I had in my life!!! Not only that but the working bond between us was awsome. I was never never sorry for all of the time I put into training them.

Nina - even "I" thought I had a different dog with me He was really good considering the stimuli at Rottstock........I think he knew he was at risk of being left with strangers 1,700 miles from home just kidding , although in our past, he did get threatened in the park to getting tied to a tree with a "free" sign on his neck....hee hee....he was a BEAST that day!

Re: Basic Obedience - Second Time Around

It's good to know that it's normal to do a couple rounds of basic. My family says its a waste of money but i've learned to ignore them.
Me and Shyla graduated 2 weeks ago and already I'm feeling that we're slacking but our second class begins in December also.

Congratulations on your success!!!

This is how I feel too - my husband and I have agreed that $79 every six weeks is a small price to pay for being able to take him with us and have reasonably sound/high expectations of his behavior! If/when we master our approach of other on lead dogs, we just 'might' try for the CGC.......never thought I'd ever say that out loud

Hi Vicki...Would you mind my "problem child" joining this class? Do you think Bryant and Moses would help each other? (I don't want to impose.) Moses needs to continue experience with other dogs as well. I have contacted Rob Cary and per your recommendation I am seriously considering registering for Gary's class that starts on 12/2 at 12:00...do you think Gary could help me continue improving Moses confidence. I think my issue may be it's been 3 weeks since our last class graduation (he has done both Basic I and II) and he tends to regress when it has been so long between exposure to other dogs.

Arlene - you and I need to get together! Gary is going to do a private lesson with us and he's waiting for the right client in a private lesson session to ask if they mind us "joining" ......since you have the same concern - it would be PERFECT! Impose?! NEVER - it would be wonderful - a fellow rottweiler owner with similar concerns, in a controlled environment, with a trainer?! A DREAM COME TRUE - you say the word and we're THERE! We are enrolled in his basic O Wednesday classes from 8-9pm starting again on December 6th.
