Clicker Training and corrections We have just begun clicker training (with a trainer) and Trinity is doing very well. She is learning commands very quickly and thats all great BUT... what are you suppose to do when you catch her in the act of doing something naughty (up at the counter, trying to dominate the kids, etc.) I know clicker training is suppose to be a gentle (hands off)kind of training method, but I can't just stand there and wait until she listens to me. I am planning on asking trainer on Tues. but was wondering if you had any ideas. Thanks for all responses. PS Trinity is just about 5 months old.

"ACKKKKK!!! OFF!!!" Clicker training is great for shaping the behaviors you want. But, in my opinion, you still have to correct the behaviors you don't want. If you ignore the dog jumping on counters, that is not going to work, because the dog gets the reward of whatever is on the counter, which reinforces the counter-jjumping behavoir. If the dog begins to jump on the counter and then hears 'ACKKK' 'OFF', in a harsh tone of voice, he will be motivated to stop the jump in order to stop the unpleasant sound from you. He will never get to whatever is on the counter and thus not receive reinforcement for jumping. When he stops and sits, you can praise for sitting.

Hey all, thanks for the replies. That is exactly what I have been doing but she is still deciding WHEN to listen, and when to NOT. What do I do when she decides NOT to listen? It's annoying, because when we are in "Training Mode", she listens 100% of the time, but in everyday life and spontanious situations, she doesn't. I stay home with her all day, and train 5 minutes here, 5 minutes there all day long, sometimes with clicker, sometimes without. Should I just keep doing this, or should I try something else? Thanks again!!
