recall

i want to learn sasha to come when i say any tips? there is a big enough park for her to run about in and sometimes she comes and others she will just wander off in the other direction more so when its time to leave the park. Rocky's master is not me his master is my partner. So Rocky just wants to play and doesnt listen to me just runs round me with toys in his mouth..all the children know Rocky and Sasha so when they run towards him he runs towards them and theres no stopping him. Any tips please?

Re: recall

Claire, if you have a partner to help train the Recall command, it is much easier to train. Have a lead on your dog and have your partner hold the lead. You have a tasty treat in your hand and show it to the dog. Tell her to sit-stay. then, turn and walk away from the dog. Since she has no training, you need to start at about 10 feet away. Turn back aroiund toward your dog and say, "Rover, COME!" When you say "COME", your partner should release the lead and your dog will come to you. Reward her with treats and LOTS of positive praise. You need to work on this about 5-10 minutes every day, increasing the distance that you walk away each time. If you don't have a partner, you need to invest in a long lead; about 30' worth of line. Make you dog sit-stay, and you turn and walk away, letting out the line as you go ( you may only get a couple of feet doing it this way since your pup will want to follow you). Call your dog and give her the praise and treat when she comes to you. IMPORTANT: Do not call your dog more than once! It is to learn that you mean what you say, and she is to obey. There is no sense at all in teaching the recall command if you have to say her name 4 or 5 or more times. This command could very well save the life of your dog, so it is one of the commands that your dog MUST have a firm and unwavering mastery of.
Good luck, and keep us posted!!

Re: recall

If you want the dog to listen to you as well, your going to have to get involved with training as well.

If you want a SOLID emergency type of recall, look into Really Reliable Recall (RRR). Google it.

Re: recall

With my girl (Cinders) its all about pleasing her. Make yourself more interesting than what shes doing. Squeaky toys work with her, but only get pulled out in emergencies. When at the park, I call her to come, then treat her, release her, and do this regularly, this way she doesn't know when its time to leave. i also touch her collar as I treat her. With toys/dumbell she would run away and avoid me, so I backed up, and showed no interest, so she started to push them into my hand, now she sits and presents beautifully.

Re: recall

'Make yourself more interesting than what shes doing' I absolutely agree with you!! Our lad Ty was getting there with his recall, but he wasn't consistent, as he's very sociable and was easily distracted by prospective new playmates. However........! One evening I'd had enough of the battle of wills, so I gave him the 'COME!' command and dropped to the ground like a stone. Within seconds he was back with me, so I gave him the 'SIT' and rewarded him. His recall now is wonderful, and if he DOES hesitate on very rare occasions, then all I need to do is bend a little at the knees and he's right back with me. Which I'm pleased about, as it's a bit of a drastic measure doing a dying fly when there are others around.....!!

Perfect Troy! This is exactly the advice I was given by Moondog when I first started working on the recall with Deja Vu. Now I'm working on her recall with others...She can't get to me fast enough on "come", but she hesitates with some of the other members of the family...it's just practice, practice, and more practice...And I definitely agree that a "recall" may one day save your dog's life...Perfect example, about 3 months ago Deja went out the front door that was accidentally left open by my daughter (and yes...the daughter was scolded)...everyone started running toward Deja and she thought "oh my what fun, let's play chase" and of course, this was in the busy street that runs in the front of our house (with a blind curve just above our house). After I got my wits about me, I immediately told everyone to "stop" and they froze in their places...I called "Deja, come" and she looked at me with great intensity, so I repeated "Deja, come" with a very upbeat voice and she couldn't get to me fast enough. Yes, I know that I'm not suppose to repeat it...but at that particular moment it was more important that she obey it! Everyone watching was floored that she did that...not me, we had just started working on it solidly and she actually responded after about 2 weeks of training...I was impressed...so as a reward we rolled and played in the grass for a while...much to her delight. This was very important to me...and it might be to you one day also...teach a solid "recall"...it can and does work!
