Ok...so I went to my first obedience class..

It is basic obedience....
The lady seemed ok...but allows gentle leaders and is asking me to try using Denvers next time(I had given up on the using it).So I don't know about that.
She was teaching "look" or "focus"
Walking without pulling
Saying "off" as people approach.( my dork likes to jump)
How to make the dog "wait" to eat...which Denver does...and allowing the dog to be touched while eating...which Denver is a growling dork about. I had already told her this before class...she asked me to stop when she saw his posture..then told me she could come for home appointment to work on that issue....

So I wasn't sure if it is normal to ask me about the home visit at the first class to help with food aggression.....

Most embarassing part......He PEED on the floor when she was showing me how to walk Denver ....just squatted and peed. ..like he was marking...I was so embarassed!!!
She said "well it's a new place"...and made me feel a little better...but come on...he's house broken.

Re: Ok...so I went to my first obedience class..

Arwen is 1.5 years and fully house trained when it comes to pee and poop. We take her out and run her before each class, and she always poohs at the park. Still on the first day of obedience 2, she dropped just an inch nugget of poop on the floor. The teacher just laughed as I turned red and told me "When you have cocker spaniels like I do, you know there is always just enough pee or poop to embaress you even in the show ring".

Seems weird to be working on touching a dog while it eats. I can touch Arwen while she eats (I know this because she blocks the walk way in the house and I have to touch her butt to tell her to move while she eats) but I don't really see that as something I would pay to have a teacher come to my house to work on. I can leave her alone for 45 seconds if I have to.

Ha my dork did this too on the first couple classes actually. Peed on the floor... he WAS marking. I have learned to watch him better. As soon as I see his "where should I pee" sniff I tell him No. Since I started paying more attention ... no more peeing.

I'm with you. Gentle leaders are a quick fix tool. Your dog would be better learning how to properly leash walk without pulling. Stop all progress, and make the "walk" the reward.

Good!

Not jumping would be good. Sounds like she's interested in a well mannered dog at graduation time. Things like doing something for his dinner (sit, lay down, etc)...you preceding him thru a doorway...him in a down-stay while you eat your dinner, are all part of good manners.

I'm not sure about the home visit. I've known instructors to give at home assignments to questions asked in this regard.

Forget about it.
