| Re: Pinch collars The reason not to use a pinch (or any correction device) on a puppy of this age is simple: corrections have no place in training until the dog has been trained, and using corrections on a puppy is a great way to kill any enthusiasm the dog has for work, puppy training should be all about fun and relationship-building, you want a dog who LOVES to work. A five month old puppy is not trained enough for corrections, and not mature enough to be expected to actually understand the training it DOES have.
Here's an example paraphrased from elsewhere: say I walked up to you, shouted "JDGFSLCGL!!!!" at you, then punched you in the arm, say I did this for ten minutes every day, what would you learn? You'd learn that a) I hurt you for no apparent reason and that b) me being around was frightening and hurtful. Now how about if I explained to you that my nonsense word actually meant "sit down", and I taught you this using bits of chocolate (assuming you like chocolate), THEN what would you learn? The place for corrections is when the dog has already learned the behaviour, and needs a reminder about obedience, they are NOT for initial training, and they are NOT for puppies.
