What trick??

I'm working from home all day so I was able to stay with Hub all day since he was brought home at 2 months old, a real happiness
I'm very affectionate with him but I know how to be strict to teach him commands so he's now 6 months old, sit, stay, lay, come, turn around, back up, stop when I tell him to while eating, wont pass the front door even opened, he's doing pretty good in general but I'm stuck! My husband and I cannot afford any obedience or training classes so I just need to keep teaching him myself but I dont know how to teach any other tricks. Any suggestions or any VERY VERY good book? cause I only want to know the specific ways for Rottweiler, I know they're special
Thank you for ANY help!

Re: What trick??

There are no specific ways to train a rottweiler, except repetition will bore the dog. If you do something too many times with ANY dog, you'll end up with a bored dog that fully understands what is expected, but chooses NOT to do it because it has been 'done to death' and you've been right there to see it so the dog thinks 'why do it again?'.

Play GAMES with the pup, have FUN while teaching the pup...if the pup has good obedience at home, begin taking the pup to other places to train - the park, a local Home Depot parking lot during the week, a school parking lot onthe weekends. Do NOT expect the same level of compliance with commands that you have at home because everything is new to the pup in terms of surroundings - new smells, sights, people, dogs, etc.

I taught a basic obedience class - I had a general class outline but was able to change up the methods for each dog in class if what I taught didn't really work for a particular dog.

Remember that what works for one rottweiler will not necessarily work for another one. For example, I have a boy that will do anything for food, and another one that pretty much loses his mind when food is present during training and he cannot focus, so I had to change my training style. I also reminded myself that dog #2 is NOT dog #1 and should not expect the same results...and training dog #2 made me so thankful for dog #1 because he was a joy to train! Dog #2 is a pain in the butt - ha ha ha!

Re: What trick??

I bought a book a while back that was highly recommended online. Once I got it, I was extremely disappointed. Very outdated methods. So, I just started searching for puppy training online and came up with many great websites. You will find many different methods for some things, and I just couldn't believe some of them. You just have to sort through them all and decide which methods you like and give them a try. If you can't find something that works, posters on here usually have new ideas, too. Good luck!

Re: What trick??

Thank you too kayozzy, I'm new to this website so I'm hoping to find more info there cause I want to avoid being disappointed by a book. I want good training specialized in Rottweilers. If by any chance u remember any of those websites, please let me know as I'm struggling finding the right ones too....a lot of people pretend they know on websites so it's hard to make the difference with the real professional......

Re: What trick??

Well after my kids taught Denver to speak.....we taught him to whisper....which is just plain entertaining....not much other use....
We taught him to speak, then when he could do that we did whisper, which he was given atreat every time he got it right...we just "woofed" by passing a breath through our mouth....he figured it out eventually...if he barked loud, we just softly said "no...whisper" then did the quiet "woof"
