Obedience training, who should take him?

We are getting a pup and first of all, I am not sure at what age he should start obedience training. I have been thru it before but the last time my pup was about 6 months old and I was single. Now, I am married and am not sure if we should both go or just one of us or alternate as I do want him to listen to both of us. Any advice?

murfsmom,
Congratulations! I'm not an expert but I would say you could start taking your pup once it's had all its shots and is vaccinated. The sooner the better, the more experiences the more people the better off your pup will be. But do remember he/she is just a small baby. Don't over do it. he/she'll need lots of sleep too.
I'd say you should/could both go so that the pup knows that it can/must obey both of you. it may be a bit difficult at first because he may want to go to the one who's outside the class. But little by little he'll/she'll understand. And it is SO MUCH FUN! why stop your husband from enjoying it too?

The best of luck and LOVE to your pup :D

murfsmom, congratulations on getting a pup. I wouldn't start classes till your pup has had all his or her shots. As for who should go, my husband and I go together sometimes and sometimes it's just him. I'm home all the time so Czar and I re-enforce what's done in class. Anyone in your family who will have direct contact with your pup should know what you're doing as far as training, even if they go and watch. Hope this helps. Best of luck to you when you get your pup.

I agree that both of you should go. But if for some reason, one of you has to stay home, then the one who should go to training class is the one whom the dog perceives as lower in rank (usually the mom). That way the pecking order is established.

Is that really true? About the dog usually perceiving the mom/female as lower? Seriously, I always thought it was the other way around?
