Building Blocks for Performance any good?

Hello folks.

Progress is good on finding a breeder. Thanks for all your help. Good breeders are contacting me left and right. Patience and perseverance was the key.

Now I am preparing myself for new puppy. I am investing in training books, to refresh what I (should) know and to add some new tricks for this old dog.

Building Blocks for Performance by Bobbie Anderson has been recommended to me. I cannot find a copy to peruse before I buy. Can anyone give me a synopsis of what it covers and also an evaluation of the contents? I Can't afford to buy every book that has been recomemnded to me and this one I am not sure exactly what it is for.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Re: Building Blocks for Performance any good?

I bought it about two months ago on line and I have found a lot of the info in it to be really good. A lot of it repetitive as my trainers use much of the same methods for puppies, but overall, yes, I think it is an excellent book.

Re: Building Blocks for Performance any good?

I highly recommend it . I send a gift certificate to Dogwise home with my new puppy owners with a few suggested books to consider...this one will be at the top of the list this year!

Re: Building Blocks for Performance any good?

Thanks! With my budget in mind, is this the ONE book I should have or would you recommend something better, or another book to purchase along with this book?

I have raised puppies before so I have a grasp of the standard housebreaking and other basic puppy civilizing measures. I am looking for tools to improve on what I know. I may try some competitive obedience or agility for the first time if the new pup seems to like it. My dogs have always been very well trained and well behaved, but not in a formal manner.

Re: Building Blocks for Performance any good?

I have way too many dog books...but one of the best training books in my library (and another one I highly recommend to my new puppy families) is Competition Obedience: A Balancing Act by Adele Yunck & Judy Byron.

If you're considering competing in obedience I'd also highly recommend
Successful Obedience Handling by Barbara Handler

(you'll notice when you go to Dogwise pages there is a list of other related books at the bottom...some of those titles are excellent as well).
