Talking Safety backup for Prong?

We just started using a prong collar on Oscar yesterday (he's 9 m/o). I'm wondering if there's some sort of back-up/safety collar he can wear at the same time just in case it ever comes apart, slips off by accident etc? Does anyone use a safety collar with the prong?

Thanks!
Julie

Re: Safety backup for Prong?

We kept a flat collar on the boys if we were using the prong, it had been known to come loose. There is a little gizmo thingy you can get at a petstore that you clip on the prong and the flat collar.

Re: Safety backup for Prong?

Oh great!!! I was wondering the same thing!
On Sunday when I was walking Marcino his prong came off (I must not have clipped it in properly). Luckily nothing happened (we live downtown where it is very busy).

Thanks for asking!! You beat me to it!

Re: Safety backup for Prong?

Thanks for the info BUT no one sells this "gizmo" here. I called 4 major petstores and described what you said and none of them had even heard of such a thing. So apparently they don't sell them here?!

Anyone have any other suggestions? Is it possible to keep his regular collar on and clip both collars with the leash?? Will this stop the prong from working correctly?

The dogs are always on two collars when we go for a walk, just in case one would break. They each wear their ID flat snap collar in addition to their prong or chain collar.

Okay...but how do you connect the 2 to your leash?? It doesn't make sense because the prong collar is up quite a bit higher...?

I don't. If one would break, I would simply then attach the leash to the flat collar. If you don't feel comfortable with this, you could always get one of those leash attachments used for walking two dogs at one time (can't remember the name of it right now but I have one for when I take the two out together) - clip one end to the prong and the other to the second collar.

Re: Safety backup for Prong?

I use a thin, round nylon slip , along with the prong and hook the leash into the rings of both...the slip is looser than the prong, so it doesn't interfer, but it's attached in case the prong should ever come apart.

Re: Safety backup for Prong?

I religiously walk Omen on a prong, and hook the leash both to the prong (it's not a micro, but small connectors, so bendable) and his nylon martingale. The prong HAS come off, so the double collar idea is a wonderful safety net.

Re: Safety backup for Prong?

I always suggest a back up collar for first time prong users...I usually use a regular chain choker, but one that is WAY too large for the dog...you don't want a tug on the lead to correct on the choke, you want it to correct on the prong only - however, if the prong should come loose...your dog will not get away from you as the choker will hold on to them. Luckily, it's only been necessary a handful of times.

Re: Safety backup for Prong?

I use a thin nylon slip collar like simular to the ones used in confirmation. I have it a few sizes to big so he never gets a correction from the slip collar. I connect the leash to both the prong and the slip collar so if the prong breaks you still have the slip to keep him at bay.
Hope this helps

This is what I do now because Hannah's prong collar DID come off on a walk leaving me with the collar and leash in my hand and my dog 15ft. ahead of me before I knew what hit me.

Another member suggested threading a thin nylon slip collar through the link openings of the prong collar.

Re: Safety backup for Prong?

If a prong collar is fitted right-it should not slip off, also they make "quick release" prong collars so the prongs themselves do not get warped from taking them off and on-I've been using them for years and never had one fall apart during training of any dog.
