Guard Dog?????

I have a question for anyone who can answer. Our pup is about 13 months. He is as sweet as can be and very good around people. I have never seen him growl at someone or show his teeth.

I often stay by myself when my husband goes out of town. If I had somone who did not belong on the property, do you think my dog would protect me??

Do Rotty's have more of a protection nature as they mature?? Is protection a built in trait of Rottweillers?

Again, glad he treats people will but want him to protect if I feel something is making me feel uncomfortable.

Re: Guard Dog?????

The responce you will hear over and over again on this site is ...

It's your job to protect your puppy not his to protect you!

That being said I would expect my dog to raise an alarm if something is not right. But he cannot be expected to "defend" you. Really no dog can. He may, he probably won't. Do a search and you'll find some very good posts about this.

Re: Guard Dog?????

rotts were bred as guard dogs. they will instinctively know who is supposed to be in or around your house. don't worry, you love them and they love you 10 times back!!

Re: Guard Dog?????

i think it would have shown by now, i was alone at night and came across a gang of youths, who seemed like trouble, Ruby was only 3.5 monthes at the times but still barked and warned them off. You never really know untill something happens.

Re: Guard Dog?????

Sometimes the mere presence of a large dog in a home is enuf to scare off potential robberies, other homes are easier targets.....however, many crminals carry serious weapons and I would hate to have anything ever happen to my dog because someone was looking for a stereo system.

More effective would be to invest in a home security system....relying on a family pet for protection is a mistake.

And while walking a rott may afford some perceived "protection", even if the dog is extremely well behaved, it seems more often to bring out the "why do you own such a dangerous animal" idiotic comments.

Re: Guard Dog?????

Rottweilers are more of a dog that like to bluff then really attack anyone, but your rott will know if your in trouble and will jump in. People here may say that you need to protect your dog, i personally think that the only things you need to do for your dog is to feed it and give it water and lots of love, he in return will defend you with his life. No dogs will sit and watch you get a beating and not do anything about it, how do i know? well when i'm with my friend and we have an fight my dog will raise up from the ground and come over to my side to see what's going on and if my friend still uses his anger voice my dog will step in front of me and show his teeth telling my friend to back off. Anna 30, if you raise your dog when he was a puppy and spend lots if time and give him lots of love, i can bet you that an intruder will get no where near you bc your rott will be in between you and the intruder.

And if you continue to allow your dog to make these decisions, instead of the correct person (i.e. you), then do not be surprised when your dog decides that your friend/boyfriend/repairman isn't allowed in your house and rewards you with a bite history and legal proceedings against you. Dogs do not have a magical psychic ability to know who is supposed to be in or around your house, nor should they be placed in a position where they are expected to make these decisions. The leader makes these decisions, and the leader should be YOU. It is irresponsible and potentially very dangerous to allow your dog to decide who can and cannot come into YOUR house, just as it is naive to think that most dogs of ANY breed will actually do any serious protecting when they are in actual danger of physical harm (dogs who actually have what it takes to do real personal protection work are very few and far between). A dog's greatest protection is in being an alert dog, someone who'll break into a house with a barking dog of ANY breed is prepared to deal with the dog. If you feel you need a dog for protection, I suggest you move or get a good home alarm system.

Re: Guard Dog?????

Denver is 9 months now...and when it is night especially.....he barks at some sounds that aren't familiar....he also is more alert when hubby is not there with us....He doesn't do it all the time....and I have also found out that apparently when we are not here and people bang on the door and window thats right next to him, he doesn't make a sound....(or maybe he just sensed that Cate was an ok person?????)

Anyway I can't rely on my dog to protect or alert me...and I don't....never planned to .....never will....It can be very nice that he alerts me when the snow falls off the roof or when the heat comes on....but thats about all I wish him to be....another pain in the butt kid that I get to protect and take care of, and enjoy his antics

My dogs will bark when a person is near and they see them. I would never expect them to protect me. That's what my gun is for :)

Re: Guard Dog?????

If you want a dog to protect you, you have to train it to do so. Not going to get into details, but if you are looking for a "personal protection" dog, it will be a LOT different than your house pet.

I am a police officer, if some one really wants to get into your house the burglary's these days carry weapons and will kill your dogs. I see it all the time the home owners are upset because there dogs are dead. Get a gun or and alarm system don't put your dog in danger.

I agree that while rotts do have protective instincts and are very loyal, in order to be guard dogs they need to be training as such.

All I can say is your RIGHT ON! I go over and over in my mind of escape routes, how to get to my guns and where they are and if I can't get to them where are my knives and what windows do I crawl out with my kids and MY DOG. What hand is my cell phone in and where are the intruders coming in at.......etc. My scenarios never include expecting my dog to protect my family. If she did that would be great, but not expected!

If she did It would be out of fear for her life not mine.....roflmao!

If one wants a true protection dog then research the personal protection training and what it takes to do it properly and go from there. A dog can't run from a bullet any faster then you can!

TOTALY off topic, but seeing as how you are going that way....

Buying a gun is not going to do you much good if you don't train with it. So, the simple fact that you have a gun, MAY, make you feel more secure, just like owning a Rott may give you a sense of security, but if you don't train how to use it, you are in about the same spot as if you have an untrained Rott.
Besides, having a loaded gun under your pillow all the time is about as irresponsible as letting your Rott run loose in someones backyard. Isn't it?

Monitored home security system is the best thing, that way even if your not home with your dog or blunderbuss, someone will be aware that you've been burgled.

.
First of all , using a gun is easy. I agree there is some safety training that comes along with guns, that goes without saying!

But as far as using one, if you can point, aim, and pull a trigger you have 90%of it down. Now be scared to use it is another story and NO ONE said a thing about a loaded gun under your pillow at all times.

I think your comparison of an untrained Rott and guns is not only off subject but is comparing apples and oranges.
