Recommend a muzzle for adult Rotty....

As title really. Our rescue (approx 5years old) has shown some undesirable tendancies lately. To avoid any issues when out exercising / training I would like to muzzle him.

Can you recommend a type of muzzle suitable for exercise and general (supervised) outdoor use (ie he can pant OK with minimal restrictions). I can easily get the Baskerville nylon basket type (not great fit).

I have seen the wire basket type which I think may be better (?) shown here www.morrco.com/mm14.html .

Also a leather type is shown here: www.kristalas.com/muzzles/muzzles.htm

I`m UK based so any suppliers in the UK would be useful too!

Thanks.

Re: Recommend a muzzle for adult Rotty....

Although the leather ones look like they would be a little more "lightweight"...it says that the metal basket muzzle allows for easier breathing and panting.

I use nylon muzzles with velcro that can adjust the tightness around the snout...but only for emergencies, or short-term.

If you plan on using it a lot, my choice would be the metal one.
You can usually convince your retailer to order one in for you from their supplier.

Re: Recommend a muzzle for adult Rotty....

I work at an emergency clinic where we utilize fabric muzzles for short term use and wire baskets for long term use. I dislike the wire basket muzzles simply because I have seem more dogs escape from wire basket muzzels than any other, but I believe that with proper fittings the wire basket might be your best bet.

Thanks.

As I say it would only be used when out exercising or in public and under supervision at all times.

The Velcro / nylon ones are probably the most comfortable but tend to hold the muzzle shut eg best for vet visits etc.

He is not particulary bothered wearing a muzzle so escaping from it should not be an issue.

Re: Recommend a muzzle for adult Rotty....

I use a basket muzzle with Sarge when I feel uncomfortable in certain situations. This also allows me to slip him a small treat and he is able to pant and even drink water.

Re: Recommend a muzzle for adult Rotty....

I've seen a lightweight nylon mesh with velcro closures that looks fairly comfortable. And they claim the dog is able to drink, and pant adequately. If you'll be exercising and/or training, you'll want the ability to do that, I'm sure. www.carealotpets.com/item-detail/?ItemID=000000000000216 You would need a measurement to be sure of the size. If you need to see other sizes just type in Best Fit Muzzles for the complete list.

Did you mention why you wanted to use a muzzle?

We`ve taken a 4-6year old from a rescue home (Our 4th rescue!). A couple of times he has `lunged` for people whilst on lead.

This is obviously not good, hence the muzzle.

He`s coming round slowly......

Re: Recommend a muzzle for adult Rotty....

A muzzle will not prevent the lunging issue and it might make matters worse in the future! Train, train, train and train. Emily tried this once with me and she had a brief encounter with God at that point. The bottom line....she will not even think about pulling that stunt again. This is an incredibaly smart breed that learns very quickly what is and is not acceptable. But it's up to you to lay down the law.

Re: Recommend a muzzle for adult Rotty....

I have to disagree with northjerseyrott's comment about the muzzle not preventing the lunging ( or certain type of muzzle/headcollar). I have a headcollar made by a company called HALTI. I cannot gurantee you it will 100% stop the lunging but I gurantee it will curb your Rotties tendencies to continue to do that. When the dog is wearing this if it tightens the leash to much it pulls the dogs head down. The harder the dog pulls the more his head will go down. Too hard and he will cause himself to summersault. I highly recommend this if nothing else seems to work. Additionally I do agree with everyone that in addition to this device you need to train. Training is the number 1 method to get your Rottie to do what you want them to do. I doubt their is anyone here that will disagree with that last statement. HTH John

Do you know what a muzzle is? Has nothing to do with a headcollar. I think the question referenced muzzle. I've seen some combo Muzzle/Halter products, but the only thing a muzzle by itsself will do is prevent the dog from biting, that's it. Nothing complicated.

Please locate a qualified trainer to assist you with this issue immediately, if you have not already.

In the meantime, a muzzle is a good idea (keeping him from the public is a better idea until you get this issue solved).

Nylon muzzles are NOT good for anything other than very short term use, they do not allow the dog to breath properly.

Go for a well fitted basket muzzle instead.
