| a hike we live on the edge of BLM land. just east of our street, there is a trail that one can hike for hours, up hill toward the Organ Mtns. When the weather is cool, I have hiked up there with Hilda, but I have to watch that I don't take her too far, or she is in pain when we get home. Yesterday, I decided Boris was ready to hike on a long line. so off we went. Oh man did he love it! he was so good, coming back everytime I called him. pats and 'good boy' and then off he went again. we could have gone miles and miles. I could hardly keep up with him. what a workout!! I am sooo sore this morning! |

| Re: a hike How did the long line hiking work? I would like to try with Sadie but I think it would get wrapped on everything. Do you hold it or let the dog drag it?

| Re: a hike I use a soft woven 5/8" X 20' line. I think I got it at a tack store. thinner cords do tangle. I keep it coiled in my hand, no tension. when he reaches the end, he walks like he would on a loose leash, no pulling. kind of like flying a kite, you have to take up slack and let it out as needed. Since part of what I wanted to do was work on his recall with other things getting his attention, I called him to me often. he did very well, even coming to me when a covey of quail was begging to be chased. sometimes mountain bikers or other hikers with dogs use the same trail, so I wouldn't let him drag the lead. I think if a dog dragged the line, yes it would get hung up. |
