12 month old rottie play mouthing

Hi I have a quick question. Harley has been in OB training. Graduated from 3 courses..But we seem to have an issue with him mouthing my friends and family. He does not even try it with me or my daughter. Knowing I am boss, but How can I stop him with others. He just gets so excited when other people are around. He does not jump, but he gently puts hands in his mouth. How can I correct him ????
I try and put him in a down stay, but let me tell you, he seems to forget, so I put him back, or make him leave the room.
Is there a correct way to teach him that it is not correct behaviour, just like he knows with me. ???

Re: 12 month old rottie play mouthing

My Bruno used to do this.
He also never did it to me...but from excitement would love to hold onto someones hand. Never hurt them....but a bad habit.

I told people that would come over to not pay attention to him for a few minutes and to tuck their hands under their armpits or into their pockets. Not hands...no mouthing.

He did get much better in time...but in all honesty we never did break the habit completly. When a favourite person came over... he would try it.

The day we had to PTS at the age of 5 because of HD....the last thing he did was die with my hand in his mouth

I am so sorry Gina....But what a memory. Do they do this because of lack of respect towards others, and he respects me and my daughter. I really do want him to break this habit. Many people around me are scared of him as is.

I honestly don't think it was lack of respect.
I think it was because he was was so friendly...and he had always been an "oral type" of dog. Always loved licking things..his bed, toys, etc.

He loved gloves too....and enjoyed carrying mine around...he would also take my gloves off of my hands, carefully using his front, tiny teeth...without ever pinching down on them.

Bruno was my first Rottweiler...I probably did things wrong with him and may have encouraged his mouthing. He never, ever hurt anyone....but I also think that it is a habit that should not be encouraged.

Now , we are on our fourth Rottweiler....and I am getting smarter with each one. Baxter does not mouth and never has.

He NEVER does it to me, or Kayla, only people he does not know, or does not see very often. More often than not, older kids to adults, no young ones....
I am trying to correct it badly, he scares people doing it.
