Training Prices?

I'm a little embarrassed to ask this, but I'd like to put Buck in obediance class. I love him, and I want to do fun things with him. He's very good and friendly and we are teaching him tricks at home, I just thought classes would be fun, since there's no dog park around here.

I found a class already but on their website they have the duration of the classes and the prices. The prices don't seem too bad, but my mom said they are probably per day... like $50 dollars was a price but is it $50 for the whole entire course or $50 every class? O_O How does it usually work? I'm too embarrassed to ask them about it because it would seem I don't love Buck enough, but I really do, and I want to spend as much time as possible with him. Since there's nowhere for him to go, he gets to ride in the car when we go on errands and stuff and he loves it. :) Plus I am training him myself, I just thought it'd be more fun in a group with a real trainer. I just dunno that one little detail. If it's for the whole course I'd do it if mom lets me.

If it's $50 per class - keep looking. That should be for the course. Our classes run $65 for an 8-week course. She teaches OB at basic, intermediate, and advanced levels, and rally for that rate. We also have use of her training facility for $5 per hour per person when it is not in use for classes. I would suggest you stop in and preview a class before signing up so you know how the classes are run and what to expect. Or, get references.

That's the one I'm looking at, I'm glad to hear it shouldn't be per class. :) One more thing, how many days a week are courses? This is an hour away so it would be bad to be every day...

The classes at our club are $75. per session. Classes are once a week for 6 weeks.

Don't be embarassed to ask about prices. Just because you are concerned about the price of the classes doesn't mean you don't love your dog.

I sure wouldn't want to spend $50. per class

It looks like it is $50 total for 8 weeks of instruction. Licensed AKC clubs like this one provide classes to the public at very reasonable prices; they are not-for-profit and the instructors are club members who compete with their dogs and volunteer their time to teach classes. It's a great deal!

My club charges $80 for 8 weeks of classes, but the cost of living in DC is probably considerably higher than LA.

Most classes around here end up being $20/night. So if it's a 6wk class, it's $120, and if it's 8 weeks, it's $160. That's for one hour, once per week. Private lessons are $50-60/hr.

$80-$95 for an 8 week course, one hour a week.

Private training is about the same range, for one hour.
Up it if you call yourself a 'trainer to the stars' (don't get me started on that...)

Wow, most of those prices seem pretty reasonable. I just priced classes in my area at 150.00 for 8 weeks from a reputable trainer with good referrences but even the lower end trainers started at about 100.00 for group classes. I had talked to one national chain of private trainers that come to your house for a 3 hour main training and assessment session and give 5-6 mini sessions after that for about 600.00 for my two dogs. They claim to give a written guarantee for their training methods and if 2,4, or even 8 years down the line we have training issues they will come back out at no cost. That seemed to be a bit pricey to me but with a written guarantee I dont know?

I'd ask about and observe their training methods. It sounds like the electric collar trainers - the ones who know only electric collars, one way to use them (not a good way)
and nothing else - including dogs.

From what she described about her training methods it is based purely on voice and body comands. They dont belive in food training either as we are supposed to be the sole motivation and focus of the dog. Because of pricing issues we went with a different trainer but you are right about observing the classes. Some of the trainers I had initially taked to didnt even metion that, and it would not have occured to me to ask if not for the valuable knowledge I gained from reading these forums. The one we did decide to go with actually brought that up herself as she was confident in her skills and techniques. People can make anything sound good over the phone but the proof is in the pudding.

I live in Ohio and when I took my rottie it was once a week, for a hour or hour and a half. It was 6 weeks long and was $50.00. There were about 15-20 people in the class.I took my rottie when she was a pup. It was easier because she was small and had not picked up a lot of bad habbits. Take the class its good for your dog and better for you. You will learn more than your dog.
