Training Tips for a Soft Dog?

My new rescue, Skye, is proving very difficult to train. She's been in basic OB for six weeks now and I worked with her some before starting classes. Her stay work is great but anything requiring pulling on a leash for direction (turns on healing/figure 8, finishes, recalls - she crouches down like you're going to beat her or something. Believe me, I'm using my best 'happy voice' the whole time. It's extremely frustrating and I don't know how to deal with it. She does a beautiful recall with a front sit with treats (no leash). I tried that for the 'finish' but as I lead her behind me with a treat she crouches down again and won't move.

I can understand if OB isn't her thing and I'd like to try agility when classes start in the spring - but if I can't train this, how am I going to train for agility?? She loves to run and fetch balls but using that as a training aide doesn't work either - I've tried.

Scout was much the same way, when we first got her. So Phil lost the lead and started working her in a safe confined space with treats, lots of happy tones and toys for reward after and to jack her up before.
She would hit the ground and panic if the lead had pressure.
She now will work happily on the lead and take the pressure but it was a long process.
I think you are headed in the right direction Patty, and it is just a matter of time with Skye.

I have had similar issues with Mr. Hubie, except that his response to leash pressure was the plant his front feet and freeze up. We spent time teaching him how to respond to leash pressure by giving him light pops while rewarding him with food and using happy voice.

Honestly though, the thing that worked best for him was training off-leash similar to Dawn Jec's "Choose to Heel" method. I would check that out for this type of dog.

LOL! Well, I do enjoy that quick response from my friends!! It's at least good to know I'm not alone with this.

I might add that I don't have any trouble walking her on a leash. If anything, she can be too enthusiastic but responds to a little tug and "easy".

She was very skittish when I first got her and would drop and crouch at any sudden noise (a lot of out-and-about leash walking has shown vast improvement in this).

Gee, I was hoping to chime in on this but I see you have been given GREAT advice already!
Yep, these rescues sometimes come with some baggage that makes you wonder just what hell they've been put through.
