It does not rest nor apply pressure on a joint.

The "tug" is so light you can do it with 2 fingers, which is very gentle. (no restriction breathing) I wouldn't have believed it myself until my friends put Blue's harness on Raven one night at practice. (I'd been thinking, "Yeah, right! Another waste of money.) It took less than 5 minutes.
OK then...I know of a very determined Sharpei that pulls like the little engine that could and whose owners will never be "train the dog" types that I will gift with this and see if it helps them.

EDITED to say: I found this little blurb, which describes what I was thinking - that tension on the lead DOES tweak the line of travel (I can't see how it wouldn't, myself). "The new harnesses have a ring in the front where the leash attaches, so you get the same turning effect as the head halter. The pressure is on the shoulders, not the nose, so dogs find it less objectionable," she says. "I have not had even one dog fight the front-clip harness the way that many fight the head halter."

And I would for sure agree that the dogs would not hate it like they tend to do with the head halters. Certainly I would also agree that it is better than a dog never going out or dragging its owner down the road.

Take careful measurements. One of the brands carries "in between" sizes. And all three straps adjust separately. GOOD LUCK!

I purchased the SENSE-ible one for the half size necessity...if this works, I will be amazed.....will report back.

I am officially amazed... I rigged him up and sent him off with his owners one at a time, both of whom are small people and one who weighs less than 90 lbs, and he could not pull her off balance (which has been a BIG problem). When he wanted to pull, it did turn him, but he also lost all his leverage....and for these particular owners I consider that a resounding success. I do think having the leash clipped to both the collar and the harness adds a measure of safety, so that's how I told them it supposed to be done... They now have a management tool that will make their walks with their dog safer and more enjoyable. Thanks to Sabellesmom for sharing it with us.

Oh I'm so GLAD this worked for them! The instructions suggest also attatching the collar, so you didn't make it up. You're more than welcome. (just glad I had friends who "showed me!" 'cuz, I sure wasn't about to believe either)
