Potty Trained......OR IS HE???

Ok, so here is the thing.......I have had shyne for almost 2 months now, he has gotten to the point where he doesnt give any for sure signs asking to go out, but I think he knows now just to hold it until we do go out, today I take them outside, he pees, and poops and i mean like a 2 minute pee; we come back inside, and they eat. they start ruffhousing and hit the dresser I tell them to lay down in a stern voice; on his way from a sit to a down he just starts peeing out of nowhere!! like a i havent peed all day pee. Then when I get his leash and scold him and put him in the kennel he pees in there too!! like a full bladder pee; Anywho he doesnt have any medical problems, and mind you this is all of 10 minutes after we have gone outside, and he is 9 mon. old now.......geez 2 steps forward 3 steps back!! why would he do this? and I have another question, my bedroom, where we are most of the time is in the back of the house and the front door is you know way in the front and I dont allow him to go up there because its out of my sight so I dont know if he knows how to ask to go outside, we sit before the door gets opened and then he knows to go potty in the same place and every thing; but how do I teach him to ask in a different way than to sit at the fron door basically??

It sounds to me like he is peeing out of fear or nervousness. How did you scold him?? This doesn't sound to me like a potty training issue. My male Rott does this from time to time. He has really weak nervous. He has never been hit ever but you'd never believe it if you met him. If a stranger would talk to him he'll lay down and roll over. When Bear was a baby everytime we would let him out of his crate when he was a baby he would pee and then lay down in it like he was in trouble. You might try getting a hold of a behaviorist. Unless he does something serious I would watch correcting him right now. Try talking to him in a soft happy voice. Do not direct his attention to it. He isn't doing it on purpose. If he leaks in his crate, take him outside and clean it up out of his presense. Hope this helps.

Some members have taught their dog to ring a bell when they need to go out. Whenever you take the dog to go potty get the dog to touch a bell (or whatever ) somewhere. Eventually the dog should ring to go out.

How do you know he has no medical problems? Could very well be a UTI.

Bell user! <----------

We've been using the bells hanging from our doors since Oscar was 7 w/o. He's now 12 w/o and uses them 90% of the time. Sometimes a little too vigourously...If you ask him to ring the bell he beats the crap out of the poor thing. haha!

If you have a quiet dog who's doesn't ask for potty, I definitely recommend it.

Sarge was my hardest to train. Lord I wanted to strangle him. Then I hung up a bell rope and I would have him "Touch It" before we went outside. And soon he finally helped me help him know when we had to get him outside.

Also make sure that after roughhousing he goes outside.. after eating, after drinking, after sleeping, after playing, and of course every couple hours.

Baron barks at us when he needs to go out - annoying jump up and down BARKING...no denying THAT signal!

Ben just kinda stares at us, nudges at you and then walks back and forth from the door to us...if we ignore him, he'll let out a little 'woof', but I know his signals...I don't get 'woofed' like Doug does

I had considered a bell since the door to upstairs (and outside) is at the opposite end of the house from the computer room, but the dogs just annoy us (politely) to let us know they need to go out.

When I am home, I tend to take them out more often - like every 4 hours or so.

When you have a dog that doesn't signal I agree the bell is the way to go!! Brando was my tough one. We hung a bell by the door and rang it on our way out..he picked it up quickly...almost to the point of annoying..when he's bored and just wants to go out he rings..when he's annoyed at me he rings..but hey at least he stoppped going on the floor!

Bruno used to just look at me and huff, Brazen will touch the doorknob or just look at you, look at the door..Happy doesn't signal at all..he's got Brando to do it for him lol..

I laughed when I read that Brando rings it to annoy you! haha! Oscar rings the kitchen door one when he wants food in his bowl. We call it the "dinner bell". They're too smart for their own good.

hey the bell works! outstanding advice. sounds like since your rott is young he maybe very unsure. maybe whats going on in his little doggie mind. hey if I do this I'll get talked to. evan tho it maybe a bad talking too. you also might want to try is as soon as you see him do this .don't yell at him but tell him no pee and take him outside right then . ring the bell on the way out . and if he will not go .after so long its back in. than into a crate its kinda like a doggie time out. now if he goes when you take him out and he does his job .give him a treat and prasie him like thats the biggest things .than when you go back in don't put him in his crate except maybe for bed time.

If it is a behaviour issue, the people here are more than knowledgeable.

I just stick to a routine with potty-ing. I find that if the boys do need to go out in the in between time, they will act uneasy this is the signal to get them out. If that doesn't work, I'll have a wet nose or 2 in my armpit or up my butt. Hard to ignore that.

I know you said he has no medical problems, however did you have him tested for a UTI? They can crop up rather quickly and most times without warning until they start peeing in the house, or more frequently or whimpering when they pee.
Most vets will do a UA and prescribe antibiotics, just in case, because sometimes they can have a UTI and the urine test comes back negative.

Goodl luck, and keep us posted on your progress
