Teaching grab

How would you teach grab?

Specifically I want to teach my dog to go to a cooler get a beverage and bring it back to me.

As of right now he knows "get it" when we're playing fetch or tug.
But I dont want him to bite and try to kill the can I just want him to grab it and bring it back, any suggestions? thanks

I'd assume you'll have to teach this in stages? One of the first things I'd think you'd have to teach is the word "take". You can start with toys and treats etc. and then work your way up to other objects.

Someone else with more expertise might be able you with the rest of it.

Hmm, allways wanted to train a dog to get me a beer too.. LOL
I suppose you would need to break it down into all it's components..

I.e. the "send out" to the cooler..
teach the dog to "hold" the "beverage"
and the retrieve to bring it back to you..
You would also have to teach him / her to open the cooler an get the beverage I guess..

I think those are most of the parts. without thinking it through to much.. Then you would need to put it all together.

Cool

Back chaining works well. Clicker training sites go into depth about it. Fancy word for what was already put out on this thread
