Stand for exam...

Since we have instilled the idea that he has to be sitting to get pet by strangers I am having trouble with stand for exam.

When the trainer comes over, he'll stand and stay (usally ) but as soon as she goes to run her hand over him his butt goes down and his tail starts wagging...

Ideas on how to correct this?

My dog had this problem too!

During training I was allowed to stand in front of him and hold his ball to keep his attention. If he looked like he might start to sit, I backed up a wee bit, enticing him with the ball. Not too much can distract my dog from a ball.

This worked great and we no longer need the ball. You can also use a treat.

Have you taught him a stand-stay independent of the exam? If he doesn't know that, I would start there. Teach it just like you would a sit-stay or down-stay, working time, distance, and distraction separately. Then when you add in the exam, stand close to start so you can help him by putting a hand under his belly if he starts to sit.
