Training Classes

Hello Everyone,
I have a 16 week old Rottweiller mix (vet says Rottie & a little Doberman) and I want to enroll her into some training classes to teach her the basic commands and some manners. She is a good pup and I've gotten her house broken and she understands "no" but sometimes goes right back to the unacceptable behavior shortly after she has been corrected. She likes to nip at your heels, and lightly bite even though I constantly tell her no and make her stop. The classes I've checked into so far run around $350, although I did find that both Petco and Petsmart have classes. Has anyone used those classes and are they worth the time and money or should I just go ahead and spend the $350? She also likes to walk between my legs while I walk, what is that all about, herding instinct?

Danny

I see that playing, as puppies do. But look for other trainers. you may be able to find classes outside a store enviroment. Ask your vet for some reccomendations, they should be more than happy to help

$350! Man, what does that cover a YEARS WORTH? Good grief! I've paid $75 or $65 for a 4-6 week session. You can also go to the AKC site and do a search under clubs.

I've seen $65-$75 for 8 week classes around here. Keep checking.

I have no idea where Spring is, but go to the AKC site, do a search for clubs in Texas and find an obedience club in driving distance. The do classes as a public service and not to make house payments

Chloe did her basic training at PetSmart and did very well , just make sure it's a good instructor. Don't be afraid to ask around and go and see the instructor teach a class !!

We have paid between 130 (HIGH) and 90 (more average) for a 6 week class.

How many weeks is the $350? I agree that sounds awfully high...

Hello Everyone,
I appreciate all of you advise, but, right now I'm heartbroken as I lost my little girl (Samantha) last weekend. I believe that someone snatched her. She accidently got out of the backyard at my girlfriends house and it's like she disappeared off the face of the earth. I had only let her out a few minutes before I went to let her in and she was gone. My girlfriend had forgotten about her being outside and raised the garage door. Sam went from the patio area thru the garage and out. We scoured the whole neighborhood and nobody had seen her. Hard to believe as she was a beautiful girl and "very" friendly. I just have to believe that someone of poor character has gotten her shut up in their house or back yard. I'm at my witts end thinking about her with a stranger. We have posted signs at all enterances/exits from the neighborhood and continue to canvas the area. I'm so afraid I'll never see her again and I know I won't find another like her. She was my baby.

Have you checked the area shelters to see if she has been picked up?

Was she microchipped yet? If so make sure the registry has her current information on file, she is so young it might not be in their system yet.

I am so sorry, but don't give up! My sister lost her 3 weeks ago Pom. After spending a week and a half putting up posters and calling vets, police, and shelters a lady 4 miles away found her dog. She remembered the posters, scooped up the dog, went and found one and called my sister. Her dog was a little dehydrated but otherwise fine.

My thoughts are with you.

Thank you all,
Yes, I've called all the vets in the area, the shelters, and I can even go online and look at the dogs that are turned in or picked up. My girl had tags with phone numbers so there is no reason that someone could not contact me or the vet if they had her and wanted to do the right thing. She was such a pretty pup that I know someone looked at here and decided they would keep her. There are allot of bad people in this world I'm afraid.

I'm happy to tell everyone that I got my girl back last night (6/16/05) and she was as happy to see me as I was her. I can't imagine where she was or what she went through, but, it won't happen again. I won't take my eyes off her agian until she's too old and feeble to run away!

She was gone for (5) days and was spotted playing in the neighborhood park by the neighbor who lives two houses down from my girlfriend. Her collar and tags were gone and I feel someone had taken them off and had her in their backyard for five days. Maybe they started feeling bad after seeing all the signs we had posted, or maybe they decided they weren't really prepared to care for a large dog, or maybe she just somehow got away. I feel certain if she had been loose all that time someone would have spotted her much sooner and called. She was so glad to get back home, she's so spoiled and definately not an outside dog, she loves the AC and after a good romp outside she loves to come in and flop down on the cold granite tile in the foyer to cool off. I can only imagine what she must have endured while she was gone. I'm so happy to have her back home and you can bet she won't get lost again!
