no more prong - thank you!

Well, thanks in a large part to many of the members here, Coffee no longer wears a prong on his daily walks. Had it not been for you folks, I never would have even known that I was SUPPOSED to wean him off of it! Dave stopped using it for walks about a month ago, but I still needed the security of it for when we encountered strange dogs. I stopped using it on his morning and evening "nature" breaks, but this weekend was our first weekend with big walks & no prong and he was GREAT.

We went to an off-leash, busy park and he was so well behaved. (he was on leash) He met labs, goldens, a CKC and assorted mutts and, when requested, walked right by them (usually they ran right up to sniff him and he sniffed back, but no pulling!) We are still using the prong for training, but I'm so happy not to have to walk around with that big CHAIN around his neck! (I'm not sure he's noticed yet - he still gets "snapped" with the leash if he's doing something wrong, but it's enough to stop/redirect him)

Last week we celebrated six months with Coffee, and he's gone from an out-of-control bumbling beast to a semi-behaved, sweet pet. We may achieve any titles, but at this point, I feel we are at least ready to try!

So thanks all. My relationship with this dog is much better than I ever thought it could be. Someone a couple of weeks ago mentioned a "what would judi w do" moment. It really works! I know I would have been way to easy on this dog cause he's so cute & sweet, but he really does need the structure of a no-nonsense environment.

I know exactly how proud you feel!
When I first got Troy I took this big then 18-month-old eagerly sniffing pulling desaster out on a flat collar. Not much fun but growing bizeps.
Then I got a prong collar - oh, what a relieve.
Now, almost 6 month later I mostly walk him on his flat collar.
Only if it is a brand new and really busy location I use the prong collar, or for training.
Congratulations! Gretchen
