| I try my best to have Jaco work for what he want/may want.... When he's about to be let loose or leashed up from the crate, lately I have been having him sit or down for me to open up the door...lately he hasn't been being very obedient with those commands while he's in his crate... obviously i can't really correct him that well when he's in there... should i even try to have him sit or down when i'm unlocking the door? BTW, he doesn't try to escape when i open the door, he does wait for me to officially let him loose or put on the prong... as always, thanks! |

| I would say if you cannot correct, then don't give the command. I don't appreciate a dog that barges out of the crate when I open the door...but Julius has always waited until I opened the crate door to come out. No barging. So I've never felt that a command is needed. Now, when we are at an agility trial, I will give him a "wait" if I'm getting him out of his crate in a busy area. This is to give me time to get his leash on & all that other good stuff. But other than that, I don't give a command.

| perhaps you could give the sit command and if he does not sit, just walk away? come back and try again in a minute or two. I have boris sit before I open the crate or outdoor kennel door. I've always used treats for that command, and he is very quick to sit for a treat in the crate or kennel. |

| I don't believe that every move has to scripted or have a formula and ritual.

| We had a similar problem with our pup pushing to get out of her crate when we were trying to get her collar on. What out trainer did was open the crate, tell her wait and as soon as she tried to push open the door, she slammed the door in her face. mind you, this wasn't a forceful slap and she made sure that there were no paws in the way. You have to be quick about it. It's just the clanking sound that the slamming door makes that makes them pause. a couple of times of this and now our dog waits until the door is open and puts her neck out for the collar. heck, she's just happen to be sprung. |

| this puppy is not pushing out the crate or trying to bolt.

| I think it helped me to keep my full grown male with no training under a little more control to have him sit and settle down before I opened the crate door. now that he is becoming dignified and mannerly, I just let him out. guess it depends on the dog. |
