what trick to teach?

Our trainer told us to teach our dogs a trick because at the end of the class there will be a competition and if it is tied, the trick will decide.
First I started on "shake" since Troy seemed to already know that one. However I am trying to tackle his tendency to paw and the "shake" trick seems to make the pawing worse.
Then a friend suggested "pretty up" where he has to sit up on his hind legs and front legs up in the air kinda hanging down. That one is supposedly taught like "sit" only more up in the air. Now suddenly Troy starts sort of jumping up and putting his paws on me as soon as he things we are going to do tricks.

I need an idea for a "save" trick for starters that will not fuel undesirable behaviour I am busy trying to get rid off at the same time.

"Bang" seemed to take a long time for my dog to learn...Some other tricks that people seem to get a kick out of are:
Big speak and little speak (or my dogs answer to "what do you say?")
and dance which is just spinning a fast circle.
