They normally lick their lips after they eat. I would "capture" the behavior--wait until it happens naturally then click, praise, treat (whatever ever reward you prefer). I taught "speak" this way and it is a much longer wait for the occasional bark.

Patience is a virtue. Good luck!

How do you train a rott to lick their lips?

i noticed that Cassie's Mom had started a topic on drooling and i remembered something i saw at the dog park that i'd been meaning to ask you guys.

At the park was a woman with a drooling mastiff and a rottweiler. as she noticed her dogs drooling, she would call them over and say "Lick, Lick" and her dogs would lick their lips continuously, lapping up the drool and/or causing it to fall on the ground.

I'd like to get sumo doing this, but don't have a clue how to train? does anyone know how?

thanks

This is definetely something that is very useful for your dog to learn, yet it can be hard to teach. The way I got Mojave to do it was by incorporating saying "lick! lick!" right after he stopped drinking water and was already licking his lips voluntarilly, like they always do. After awhile he started connecting the two and now does it on command. Sometimes it helps to tap them under the chin, gently, and say "lick, lick" and sometimes they'll do it. Good luck!

I also heard somewhere that dog trainers use Peanut Butter or some sticky substance...put it on the dogs lips, and when the dog goes ahead and licks the peanut butter give the command "Lick." That might also work

I couldn't teach either of my big guys to "speak" on command....I had a really stupid hand puppet that they always barked at when they saw it....tried to put a command to it, but they never quite got it.
Latest puppy barks on command...dumbest thing really...my teens are really into that commercial "Whazzup????"...they started yelling "Whazzup" at each other one evening, startled puppy awake and she started barking at their noise. Ever since, whenever we even just whisper "Whazzup" she barks!!!!
