Re: Teaching an older dog to get in vehicle?

Sounds like you're on the right lines with the small steps... we had lots of problems with our pup Meg with travelling, we had to lure her into the car with treats. We also built up travelling in small steps.
We found a big help to the sickness was to keep her occupied, and the best thing we found was pig's ears for her to chew... I know some don't approve of them but they were magic for us! While she was chewing she would lie down and not notice the car moving. We then had a setback when we used out smaller car for a while the other was in the garage, going back to the jeep she got sick again, so we are back on intermittent pigs ears for now.
Also for treats, one of the nest we have found in Burns ocean bites which are pieces of dried fish. They STINK but Meg LOVES them. They are the only treat we don't have to lure her in with, we just get the bag, and she will jump straight in and wait for one!
Also we travel her on the back seat (in a harness), so to get in she can jump onto the floor and then onto the seat - so not a big jump in or out of the car...

HTH!
