correction for mounting

the new guy and Hilda really like each other. follow each other around, drink water together, lick each other's dripping lips, and play, play, play. problem is he starts getting rowdy and mounts her and it hurts her hips. should I keep his prong and leash on and correct? I don't want to interfere with them working things out, but I don't want Hilda to be hurt. I am supervising their play but it seems to more quickly escalate when I have him on a lead. at first they played very nicely, now he is rougher so I'm keeping them from playing, they take nice walks together. I'm afraid he is sensing her weakness. I'm hoping after classes he will be better about it. Would it be wise to just give really serious correction or would that 'undermine' her place?

Re: correction for mounting

It's good that you are neutering this boy this week......how old is he ? How old is your female ? I would suggest to keep all separated and get both the younger ones in obedience classes and keep going on a regular basis. If your female has bad hips, she shouldn't be subjected to rough play or mounting. Others with experience will hopefully weigh in here as well. If your most recent boy has only been there a week....he should not be loose with the other dogs until he is settled in and had some training and of course, be neutered.

Re: correction for mounting

If Hilda does not correct him for the insults (most bitches will object strongly), then yes, you should. Let him drag about a 10 foot line. If he starts to mount, then grab the end of the line a jerk him good (if you can do it so he falls over backwards that is wonderful). Do this every single time. A longer line being drug will relieve the on-lead problems and give you a better opportunity to correct without getting so close. He might even think god has done it.

Re: correction for mounting

ok, I can do that! Hilda does object, and he backs down, even lays down, but it starts to un-nerve her when it hurts and he keeps on trying.
