Arrow 1st day of beginner class

Logan's 1st day of beginner class was last night. He did great! Just like an old pro. He is 6 months old and held eye contact all during heeling and stays. Even the trainer was impressed. He made me so proud

That's great! I'm teaching a Basic class right now, and the most important thing I want them to learn in this class is how to get and keep their dog's attention. If the handlers can get their dogs to focus on them rather than the other dogs and people, everything else will fall into place. Keep up the good work!

Re: 1st day of beginner class

The puppy class is held immediatley after the beginner class so his reward is to play with the puppies. The trainer will allow him to stay in the puppy class at no extra charge as long as he is a well behaved boy. So we are having a blast!

Re: 1st day of beginner class

dmoniz were you using treats while you had his attention. I find it's impossible to keep my girls attention when I don't have a treat. If she doesn't see one...she's sniffing all over the ground looking for one.

Re: 1st day of beginner class

I do have treats, but doesn't get one everytime and I am trying to increase the time betwen treats. I usually just do a lot of talking and telling him what a good boy he is and give him the treat when we halt.

Re: 1st day of beginner class

From the day I got him I would say his name and treat when he looked at me. As he got better at it I would lengthen the time before he got the treat. So I would say his name, wait, treat and release. I would have to give the release right after the treat because he always looks down as he eats the treat, but I didn't want to treat for the release. Make sense?

Re: 1st day of beginner class

I think that's why you get great eye contact. I skipped over that. Something I need to get on top of when I get home. Thanks
