Age for correction training?

What age is appropriate for begining correction training. My pup is 5 1/2 month now, and I was wondering when I should start her on correction especially for either the pinch collar or the shock collar. Any help would be appriciated, thanks.

Re: Age for correction training?

Some dogs never need 'correction training'. If you are referring to using a pinch/prong collar because the buckle collar is no longer effective (you are getting pulled everywhere and she is doing the pulling) then yes, you can, if shown the proper way to use a prong collar, use one on your dog.

There is really no set age when a dog will 'require' or need correction training. Some never do.

If you are consistent in training and train happily, you may never NEED to correct her using a pinch collar.

How much training has she had already, and how did she do in those classes?

Re: Age for correction training?

What have you been doing with her up until now? Has she been in a training class? Are you having problems that you feel need stronger measures for correction than a buckle collar? If so, what are they?

A bit more info would be helpful.

Re: Age for correction training?

I put Tabitha on a correction collar when she was 8 weeks old. I am referring to the "Choker" chain type, not pinch. I seldom have to use anything more than a slight, quick little tug on it to get her attention when training session are taking place, the correction collar is more of a mind set for her and I than anything else. In other words, when I put the collar on before training, it lets her know we are about to go to "work" and gets her attention. I remove it when the training session is complete.

Re: Age for correction training?

At 8 weeks old the pup should have only a buckle collar on, and only when supervised by you. Any time you are working with a pup that young the buckle collar should suffice to let the pup know something different is happening. Use treats and happy voices for training an 8 week old pup - not leash corrections (and yes, even a slight tug on the lead is a correction).

Re: Age for correction training?

Hmmmm! So my different opinions, trainer insisted on it during puppy training and I assumed it to be the methods as that is what I was taught a long time ago.

So what is the appropriate age to use the correction type collar?

Re: Age for correction training?

as a generla rule 5 months is the absolute minimum for a pup to wear a correction collar.

Please do keep in mind that a correction collar is a tool that should be used only when required, and then AS a tool, it's not something that should be automatically used on every dog "just because". From the sounds of your posts, you seem to be under the impression that every dog needs a correction collar as a matter of course, and this is not true.
