Corrections I need some ideas on what to use for corrections on our walk. I have Cain on a prong collar, which works great for guiding, but when I need a major correction, the collar isn't effective enough. Any ideas?

If a prong collar is not effective enough, you have other training problems. I would suggest that you work on getting your dog to focus on you. This needs to be worked on without distractions at first, and as the dog improves you can increase the distractions until you can take the dog out in public.

This sounds cross-wise to me. The GL is a "guidance" system and the pinch collar for corrections. I agree, that there must be something going on here outside of the issue of corrections. It is also very likely the pinch is not properly fitted or applied, or that it is being over-used making the dog learn to simply work through the pressure. (example: In fitting the collar, if it is too loose, it will fall down on the large trap muscles where it will do nothing useful). If the dog is pulling into the collar on a regular basis you cannot give a correction. See if you can get someone to help with collar fitting, use and act as a coach. Are you taking regular lessons from someone?

I have the prong collar pretty snug, just enough slack to get it over his head. I have it fastened to my lead using both rings on the collar, so there is no "pinch" when I correct. Is that correct? I outweigh Cain by 20 pounds, which gives him a bit of an edge over me, but I really don't want this to turn into a wrestling match. Yes, I'm working with a trainer, but haven't began formal training classes yet, we're working on Cain's manners before he starts that.

YES! Houston; we've discovered the problem!!! ![]() Prong collars DO NOT slip over the dogs head to get it on! You unhook the prong and put it back together AFTER you put it AROUND the dogs neck! Unless you have a REAL FAT DOG; His head is MUCH bigger than his neck. Your prong collar is NOT snug around his neck where it needs to be snug. Proooooooooblem solved! Yipeeeeee!!!! Oh what a difference you're going to see guber!
