Poddy in the house for adult dog - quick question

Yesterday like a fool I ran out of the house and forgot that Hercules has been a jerk lately and has tinkled in the house 3 times in the last week. Hence, I was going to start baby gating him in a smaller area in the kitchen since his urinating in the house has revoked his full house privleges when I'm not home.

Well, yesterday since I forgot, he decided to make it the 4th time in about a week.

I know with puppy's you are not supposed to rub their noses in it and scold them, but what do you do with a grown adult dog who knows better? I did call him over and make him sniff it and then told him "no, poddy" (he knows this from walks) and "bad dog". But I wasn't sure if I should make this a big "to do"? As soon as he sniffed it he laid down and looked pitiful so he knew he was busted (even before I got "no poddy" out of my mouth). If he does this again while baby gated I would like to know how to respond? If he does it while I'm right there, I know to make a big stink over it, but it's the other situation I'm unsure of.

I am a believer that when there is evidence, it is perfectly acceptable with an adult to show him that evidence and let him know you are unhappy about it. Scent posts are a clearly obvious thing to dogs and it is not like he could be confused about what you are showing him.

Thanks Judi! I can now plan out my thought process of how to scold him ahead of time

I brought it in from the garage and placed it in the hall, so I can not forget!

Really? - I thought that unless you catch a dog "in the act" that showing them a transgression meant nothing at all to them - or does this ONLY work for marking behavior?

Re: Poddy in the house for adult dog - quick question

I'm talking about adults, not puppies or dogs in training but adults who know the rules and have chosen to disregard them. Well Lisa, that is a rumor promulgated by dogs. I believe that if there is obvious evidence, I can take that dog to the evidence and fuss at the evidence (not the dog) and show the dog that I am very unhappy. As long as dogs have convinced those responsible that unless the human sees them there are no consequences, they are very happy dogs indeed. All it means is sneak around the corner or wait until no one is looking and do whatever your little heart desires. This idea originated when one very smart dog whispered the thought into its sleeping master's ear and inserted a subliminal message. The naive owner then believed it was a message planted in his mind by god and like all the newly religious, spread the gospel far and wide until it became "common wisdom" believed by (almost) all and rarely questioned.

Yes, the species dog is very clever indeed.

Wow - I do not want to hijack this thread with related questions so I will start a new thread. - Thanks

Re: Poddy in the house for adult dog - quick question

Judi, you put such a spin on things!!!!!!!

Re Hercules: One of my beagles will wander at night, and pee somewhere in the house. Gating him in our room, he doesn't. Free run of the house during the workday, he will, gated in the den he won't. If he can't get away from it, he just doesn't do it.

Baby gates---a good thing.

Re: Poddy in the house for adult dog - quick question

Once again, the petsitter came today, so there is no conceivable reason health wise Hercules should be poddying in the house. It hadn't happened in a month, so I thought we moved passed this. He's got me so ticked off I can't even describe it. I deliberately snapped his collar on him when I got home so I could grab him and scold him. He got all excited thinking he was going somewhere when I snapped that collar on - little did he know I was going to make him smell his poddy in the house and give him a scolding to surpass even the scoldings from before.

So he's hiding out in the shower (often his sleeping spot) and for the last half hour from when I got home from work, I have not seen him. Tommorrow when I go to work, I'll be blocking him off so he only has the kitchen. If he continues to poddy, he will find himself locked in the laundry room from now on.

Sorry to go off on a rant. I just can't believe he's pulling this crap with me after I thought we moved past this! He is something else!

Yeap our Claus tried that - Ha Ha they don't see me doing it.

Well guess what Claus now you don't have the opportunity to piss in my house. You're in your crate during the day now. He may be smart - but I'm smarter

Re: Poddy in the house for adult dog - quick question

Sue, I feel your pain. One of our punks, I mean PUGS, was doing this. And then he got where he would do it right in front of us, we would scream at him or throw something at him and he would just keep on marking. So I fixed his little a** I bought a belly band and stuck it on him. MARK ON BUDDY! YOU will have to SIT in a nice wet belly band. He did, it was and now he keeps his little chicken leg on the floor when he is in the house. Good luck with Hercules!!

If you want to double and triple the humiliation - make that belly band PINK! Then walk him around the neighborhood so all the other dogs will laugh and make fun of him.......

Re: Poddy in the house for adult dog - quick question

Yes, he sure is still being educated. Not only did we enroll in our next OB class last night, today he now has been enrolled in Sue's School of Hard Knocks. Piss in my house when you know better - yea right you big stinker. I've already got the set-up ready to go to lock him in the kitchen for tommorrow.
I still can't believe they do this when they know better! I teased my cousin that her dog tinkled right in front of me one day while I was watching her and that at least my dog had the decency to piss in my house behind my back. Now I'm starting to think it's almost worse the other way around!? What the heck is going through their thick heads when they think they can just lift their leg? Jeez, it just irks me to no end - a puppy I could understand, but this - heck no!
