Deaf Dog Training

I have a friend who rescued a deaf puppy (not a rottie) and has no clue how to train her. She lives in the Philadelphia area.. can anyone help with a book, a referral, suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Re: Deaf Dog Training

There are a couple of great on line groups. I had them bookmarked before my computer crashed. A quick google search should point you in the right direction pretty quick though.

Re: Deaf Dog Training

My mother in laws dogs were both deaf from birth, and fully trained with hand signals. They knew every trick by hand signals, and the dogs are constantly checking in with her, in case she is trying to get their attention.

They were little ????zu's or apso's....but to train them, she'd use the hand signal, then gently put them in the position that she wanted, and repeat til the dog 'got it'.

Dunno if there is an easier way, but my MIL has a LOT of patience.

WOW - I knew you guys would know. You know EVERYTHING. I just printed it out and will give it to her tonight.

I told her stories of blind Frankie so when this little deaf puppy showed up, she took it.

Re: Deaf Dog Training

It seems like you've got pretty much everything you need. As an additional resource, Lorrie (a member here) who is associated with Caledon rescue up in Canada, has rescued and placed a deaf puppy. I helped transport Elmo, and he was a doll! Nearly impossible to wake up, but cute as a button.

If you PM her or contact Caledon, they might be able to refer your friend to trainers who work with deaf dogs. Tell your friend we wish her well!
