walking on a leash

I have seen many different places about having your dog on the left side when your walking is there a reason for this? Mine likes to be on my right side.

Historically, it was so that your favored arm was free for weapons, whatever. Comfort for the dog is where you teach them to be.

I think Squeak just stays on the left side cause thats where we have always had her both my hubby and i are lefties. So for now seems to fit all of us just nicely :)

A really excellent reason for staying with the traditional position is you never know when you might decide to prove yourself and your dog as a team and get a CD...................

Re: walking on a leash

I have/had two, so I trained one to walk on each side, it prevented tangles and was easier to control them.

Re: walking on a leash

Another reason to train for the left side is if you are walking on the street facing traffic, as you're supposed to, the dog is on the non-street side.

This only works in countries where they drive on the right side of the road :)

Re: walking on a leash

I walk with the dogs on the left side because this is the position they are in for all training exercises. Just got used to doing it this way.

Re: walking on a leash

Friends of mine are hunters and the majority of people shoot right handed. If you shoot right, keep your dog on the left (could get messy if they pop up when un expected)
