My dog wont stop jumping on guests

:( Hi Guys!!! My first time here, but a very interesting spot for advice solely on Rotties!! Mine is 14 months old and is a great Rottie. Boris is very well trainned with his basic obediance commands and a great walker on leash and with people and other animals outside(keyword). BUT!!!! In the house, he is great with just us and son at home. As soon as we get company he gets overly excited no matter what we do. We have trainned him to have an off switch...which works great with just family at home, but it won't work at all when we have company. I can get him distracted initially by putting peanut butter in his Kong toy(which works great until PB is gone!!! :D ). When he's done with that he still wants to jump and be all over company!!!! I've tried everything I can think of. Such as knee in the chest(that does not work at all....he gets more excited when we do this....crappy method will never try again), his off switch, PB in Kong, throwing ball while people here....just everything we could think of. Open to any suggestions!!! That's his only downfall....when we get control of that he will be the best of dogs!!! Thanks for help in advance.
Thanks RottieFreak ;)

Put him on a leash, and make him sit when you open the door. Then leave him on the leash and make him behave. You have to be the boss, both inside and outside.

Welcome to the forum.

Actually I didn't mention that!!! I do have leash attached to couch!! We put him on that, but he constantly chokes himself while leashed. We also have baby gates to pen him in kitchen, but he just keeps jumping up and down to see us in living room. It can get noisy when young one in bed. I'm telling ya I've been trying all avenues.

Did you train him yourself or go to classes?

I agree with Sandi. The dog should be on a leash which is held by YOU when there are guests around. You will not be able to correct him jumping behavior when he is tied to the couch.

Also, does this dog have a crate? Maybe that would be a solution. Have him say a brief hello if you want him to & then in his crate he goes with a Kong for the rest of the time. I think that's a good solution for everyone involved.

:)

Of course he's going to "choke" himself if he's tied to the couch. Try leaving the leash either loose so you can grab it and keep him from jumping, or keep it in your hand or attatched to you. The idea would be to stop him either just before or as he begins to jump.

Work with him for a while, then crate him with a filled indestructable Knog.

Re: My dog wont stop jumping on guests

As far as crate goes guys, its not a bad idea. I've thought of that, but we live in a small mini-home and just don't have the space for him. That's why I had designated the kitchen as a pen area. As far as him being attached to couch I am sitting where lead is attached and hold it to snap collar and do make him sit. He just won't stop pulling which in turn chokes him of course. He is our second Rottie and I am very familiar with trainning. Boris did not attend obediance classes, but we do trainning on regular basis. I have attended classes before and have always been taught the key to trainning is doing it everyday at home. I just wish I could learn of a good useful off switch that has worked with someone elses dog. ;)

While the key to training is working on it at home, attending classes teaches the dog to work with distractions. Your dog needs to know that when you say sit, no matter what, you mean sit.

This should be a very simple problem to correct. He is jumping up to get attention and you know he is going to do it. Prior to his jumping, tell him to sit and reinforce the sit so he can't jump up. If he does jump up, turn you back on him and ignor him completely -- not the reaction he's looking for and again, sit and praise him.

Re: My dog wont stop jumping on guests

RottWily thanks for suggestion. I will definitely try that out. I do make him sit the instant i hear anybody coming up the deck, but have never turned back on him directly while he tries jumping. I have ignored him and not look at him when behaving this way, but have never turned back on him. Will try. I hope it works. This is only problem!!!! He is great any and every other time. He is very used to distractions due to us training with other dogs and neighbors always being around us. Thanks again for your opinion and not downing me on not paying for a training class.

Re: My dog wont stop jumping on guests

Have you tried a prong collar? - Used correctly - your correction will BE a correction - if he is choking all you are doing is containing him on the leash - you HAVE to do something he will want to avoid in the future.

I would find a good training group in your area and sign up for class ASAP - they will instruct you in the proper use of the collar - and yoiu will have the benefit of teaching him to work and listen to you no matter what.

It is easy to say you have a trained dog when only family is there - if he ACTS untrained with other people then he is NOT trained and needs the benefit classes would bring.

Do a search here on jumping up there is lots of information here - Welcome to the forums :)

Re: My dog wont stop jumping on guests

What do you say to Boris when DOES get off the company?

For example, he jumps up, you say "OFF", his feet hit the floor - then what? Are you rewarding him for good behavior with a treat or an emphatic, heartfelt "YESSS!"?

I realize you have a small home, but crate training, IMO, is a must for these Rottweilers. You can purchase large folding crates or even soft-sided ones that fold up if you don't want it around 24/7.

Re: My dog wont stop jumping on guests

Jayneliz I always reward him with treats when he does do good definitely. He's a good dog don't get me wrong!!! He loves being around us at all times. Its the only thing he's really stubborn about is people visiting us. He won't jump on them if they are outside though, so I find it weird at times. As far as crate, I just don't think I will go that route ever unfortunately. I just wouldn't be able to stand seeing him in that little space for a couple of hours. I had considered, but my having no extra space and the thought of cooping him up in there turned me off. I know its a great tool for people who like them, but its not for me. I will try ignoring his bad behavior as was suggested to me and keep rewarding him for good. I'm sure he's gonna clue in eventually. He is still a pup too and they are hyper!!!!!

I am afraid that won't be enough - they DON't clue in - the jumping is a self rewarding behavior - he jumps for attention - he gets it - negative attention is STILL attention (ask a 3 year old child)

If it is a puppy - NOW would be the time to eliminate the behavior - a full grown Rottweiler hurling themselves at you is NOT only annoying - but a danger.

As I suggested previously - you are NOT correcting the dog sufficiently if they continue to repeat the behavior

W/o a doubt, the key to training is practice outside of class and it's a mark in your favor that you are working on training at home. However, you may not be as familiar with training as you think you are since you can't stop your dog from doing something you don't like/want him to stop doing.

Also, your comment about not being able to stand seeing your dog confined in the "little space" of a crate shows your depth of understanding of dogs think and how they look at the world because of how their brains are wired could use enhancement.

Rotties have been my exclusive breed of dogs for more than 20 years, but I take myself and dogs to class. There's always something to learn! What better way to learn than to go to class where the instructor knows more than you and wants to impart his or her knowledge to you?!
