Weight Pulling

Now before anyone gets twitterpated, THERE WILL BE NO WEIGHT ON THE SLED!! But our tracking trainer is also the UKC Weight Pull trainer in our area and she emailed us and told us about a practice they are having tomorrow and asked us to bring Guerin. She wants to put him in front of an EMPTY SLED and see what he will do. She is loaning us a harness and wants to start us on working with him getting used to the equipment and pulling an EMPTY SLED to see if it is something he and we want to do down the road. So we are going to go for fun and check it out.
I, of course will take pics!
Any hints, tips, suggestions????????

Re: Weight Pulling

TWITTERPATED!!? US? About YOU?? NAh...Only if you don't post pics! I know nothing about weight pull...can only imagine it's a bit like carting. My only advice would be to start out slow...like you said with no weight to begin with, and go from there. I have seen dogs of different breeds that have that totallly muscled front end...IMO if you do a variety of activities with Guerin, he'll be fine. Pics please!

Interesting points. We will have to look closely at the dogs that are there tomorrow. We were just thinking it might be fun for the boy to do now and then. We will definatly proceed with caution!

LOL! I love you guys!! HAHA! Yup we are going to look carefully at the other dogs for the bulky front ends! And as you all know Guerin does a wide range of activities! We are just ALWAYS looking for something to keep this guy busy and entertained!

Re: Weight Pulling

I've never done it, but I wouldn't do it regularly with weight on the sled with a dog I was planning to show in the breed ring - the heavy front end musculature makes them look unbalanced. Without weight is probably fine, though. PICTURES PLEASE! Have fun! :)

Re: Weight Pulling

Most people start with just a drag weight - it doesn't have to be a sled. Can be a small tire or even lead weights. The dog needs to feel comfortable in the harness, and unbothered by the thing behind him that follows his every move. Also, good hips are a must.

Re: Weight Pulling

I can't believe you thought we would get twitterpated! Sounds like fun as long as there is a camera involved.

And it is our wanting to protect his joints, since he is only 14 mo. that we are staying away from the weight. The "sled" they use at practice is basically a glorified cart like you would use at Costco. Thanks everyone for the feedback, we would never do anything to cause this boy to get hurt!

Re: Weight Pulling

I'm sure the trainer will have someone holding a rope attached to the back of the cart - otherwise the unloaded cart can run up behind the dog when he starts out and bump his hocks, or spook him. Thats not a problem with an actual drag sled or weights, so most people use these when training alone.
