Crate training problems

Ok I got some GREAT Advice on Crate Training but it doesnt seem to be working......Maybe I am just being too impatient.

I did the clock, the warm water bottle, The toy in the crate that he can snuggle up to.
We put him in the crate and have the crate where he can see us. However EVERYTIME I put him in there he screams, barks, crys, and throws his little body against the front door. I tried to ignore it, I tried to tell him no, I tried to give him a treat every time he was quiet. As soon as he got the treat he would start the scremaing, crying, throwing his body against the door routine again. I tried leaving him in there for 10 minutes the first time, Take him out for 20 - 30 minutes, PLay and then put him back in there for 10 minutes out for 15, in for 25 out for 15, in for 30 to 45 out for 10......So on.........
He just sits in there and cries, barks and throws himself around.......I just dont know what to do.......
I have let him out when he whines two times thinking he had to potty and that wasnt the case, He just wanted out to be next to me or my husband. I have even tried sitting in front of the crate and moving away a few inches at a time....no matter what I do he will not stop crying.
Any other Ideas?

Re: Crate training problems

oh my, sounds like my kids when they didn't get what they wanted or their own ways! :D the only thing i can suggest is what i did with my kids...ignore them, let them have their fit and don't give in to their "demands." they eventually stopped. once they learned crying and carrying on didn't help them get their way, they eventually stopped the tantrums altogether.

i also did the same thing when they got put down for a nap/the evening. if they were fed, dry, and otherwise taken care of and cried just for the sake of crying, i let them cry it out. they eventually went to bed without a hassle. don't know if you can do the same thing with a puppy but.....it sure worked with children. :)

That was my thought.....Ignore it and they will learn that they dont get their way. I will keep trying.......

Re: Crate training problems

Have you tried feeding him his meals in his crate? While he is in there eating close the door for 5-10 seconds then open it up again. Gradually lengthen the time that the door is closed. Also, try playing with him first and get him really tired then put him in the crate with a yummy treat and shut the door. If he starts to whine and howl you will just have to ignore him. I know, easier said than done.

Re: Crate training problems

where is your crate at? maybe it needs to be somewhere where you can't hear the constant whining.

Re: Crate training problems

I have tried feeding him in his crate for the last four or five days. He will stay there and eat ONLY if I am RIGHT in front of the door. If I take ONE step away he will spill his food EVERYWHERE and Scream, cry, throw fits, ect.
I have his crate in our bedroom at the foot of the bed with the door facing the bed so he can see us, However I cant even get up in the bed without him doing his temper tamtrum bit.........I May try moving his crate to his room. When we arent home he is in the Laundry room. He does the same thing in the Laundry room. As soon as I close the door he throws his tantrum. Eventually it will get quiet in there as if he is eating or sleeping.

Honestly, that was my next thought. Take the Pillow out of the Laundry room and move his crate in there. That way he gets used to sleeping or resting in the crate.

Re: Crate training problems

Athena was crate trained from day 1 that I had her.

I left a radio on so she's have company.

As long as the puppy is not hurt, ignore the cries. The dog needs to learn it casnnot have attention 24/7.

However at that young age, during the day make sure there's enough time out of the crate to socialize and potty breaks. Not sure your life situation, but I was 2 miles from work, so I went home everyday for first 8 months or so. She had multiple accidents in her crate until her system was matured. ( she was alone 3 hours morning, then 3 hours in afternoon, due to housing situation, someone was there after I left)

Due to space confinement, Athena slept in a seperate room, she never exhibited any loss by doing this. She bonded fine to her 'human' pack.

Expect the pillow to be destroyed one day, lol. my girl ruined so many dog towels it was amazing. Be careful of the puppy ingesting stuffing though.

Bes of luck! let us know how it goes! :D

Re: Crate training problems

I went through this a couple of months ago. I'd forgotten how much a pup could actually scream. Ignoring worked for us and after a week or so she seemed to be ok. Then she decided she didn't like going in, once she was in she was ok. We used treats to entice her in and again this worked but then she wouldn't go in without a treat. Past week has seen another improvement where she will go in on command, if shes in an obedient mood. :) Hopefully now I can say she is crate-trained. Good luck.

Re: Crate training problems

Put pup in crate. Close door. Leave house and go shopping. Do not release the pup the minute you return. Wait at least 15 minutes or more.

Re: Crate training problems

I will give that a try next......If he is crying and screaming when I put him in his crate do I tell him no or just ignore it all together?

You do just what I said. Put him in the crate and go run some errands. If you want to hold a conversation with him, save it for other times and circumstances.

Well, now you know why you are having problems. If you don't have any errands to run, vaccum the floor but quit responding. You are making it harder for him not easier.

I was going to do that yesterday but I am SCARED to DEATH he is going to eat it! hehehehe I dont want him to eat the article of clothing or a towel and then it get stuck in his intestines. I know that can be a SERIOUS issue with pets.

As far as the ignoring goes......I was telling him no every time he would throw a fit, But I guess that is still a form of acknowledgement. I will stop doing that. I will try putting him in the crate and then just doing other stuff.........Weather it is running errands, cleaning, vacuming, ect
