Taking it to the next level

My six month old Rottweiler loki is proving to be one smart cookie.

I have no problems teaching him the basic things that make him a "Good Dog"

but i would like to give him advanced training that matches his Intelligence.

Most Dog training classes are over priced and offer little help when it comes to this kind of dog .

I should add that he is a great family dog who makes me laugh a lot.

Any help or advice would be gladly taken.

You might be surprised at how much you and your dog learn in a class. You can read books, I suppose, but will your dog behave the same in your house as he will walking down a busy street in say, Kaiserslautern? Classes teach you and your dog to deal with distractions and other dogs. In my opinion, quite a good investment.

I don't think your assessment of training classes is terribly accurate, myself. Most classes run through clubs can benefit any dog, even a canine Einstein.

If you're not an experienced dog trainer, find one. Classes can be quite enjoyable for both you and your dog. And you will learn a lot. There's a whole lot more to it than simple commands. ;)

Re: Taking it to the next level

I don't know, I think Loki has a point. Years ago, I went to a couple group classes run by private trainers that were so dumbed down, I had to wonder who they were aimed for: mentally challenged owners and their equally handicapped dogs, or maybe just people who don't put in much time or effort. I don't know, but I found myself looking for something more.

Here in the states, I've found that AKC obedience clubs seem to offer a higher level of instruction. Also, a good Schutzhund club will give you an unparalleled experience. I see that your location is Germany, and I don't know much about how things are set up there, but maybe you could contact the ADRK for suggestions. Generally, you'll find more challenging classes if you hook up with people who actually compete with their dogs. Good luck!

In my opinion, with a young dog, even a dumbed-down class still offers good opportunities for proofing and socialization.

I totally agree Amanda. Julius really doesn't care if they're dumbing it down. We work on his proofing & his butt is always wiggling when he knows that we're at class. :)
